My senior is skipping a lot of school...

Our school just had its senior parent meeting. Our seniors can miss the last 3 weeks of school if they have a job or internship. They must not have more than 8 unexcused absences since winter break to participate. I guess your kid would miss out.

Late 00s FCPS grad and this sounds exactly like my senior year. Went to a top private school and now have that UMC Fairfax County life. It seems like it was fine. People saying otherwise are jealous they have to work more for the same.

It's a really good trial run for figuring out what you do/do not have to do. Like people are saying - there are some limits even if you get your work done (just like real life) but the practice findings those limits is really helpful later in life - college, jobs with unlimited PTO or flexible arrangements. If your child is the kind of person that gets things quickly and does work faster than others, they will need these skills to keep from becoming totally burned out and discouraged.

It's time for the seniors to move on. They have had it with high school, and with the constraints. Just grit your teeth. It will all be over soon.

Senioritis. And if she’s been grinding since middle school, plus going to a demanding college, I’d say she’s earned some time off. Talk to her about it and see if you can make some kind of compromise. Ask her to explain how it’s not going to affect her grades, and find out whether she can be disenrolled for missing too much or whether Dream College can rescind if her final GPA is below a certain level.

What is she doing during the time she skips? I’d be concerned if she’s just scrolling her phone all the time. But otherwise I think you find out more about impact on grades and on the learning, and then let her make her choices.

Still graduated at the top of his class and ended up at a T20.

I could have cared less because most of the time spent in class was a huge waste of his time where he had finished his work and was forced to just sit there and stare at the walls (was not allowed to do work from other classes, was not allowed to get his phone out).

He used the time at home to do other productive projects, get his homework done, etc. Not a single person from the high school ever mentioned it to him or to us.

Not every kid needs to be in school 7 hours a day to accomplish what they need to accomplish.

How did your son manage not to get dinged for absences? Either by individual teachers or by school attendance policies? My DD hates being in class, hates all the wasted time, and would much rather spend that time more productively.

Signature? Isn't it a portal or email nowadays?

And this continues to be true later in life. The people who need 7 hours get fussy about it.

I took off every Friday second semester senior year. Our principal was on a mission to catch my friend and me - it was like Ferris Bueller's Day Off. We finally slipped up, and he caught us, and I swear to god the poor man had a heart attack that night. Thankfully, he did not die.

What's an attendance report card? Is it an email to parents?

Life lesson is FAFO. All it takes is one pissed off teacher who might write the university. There was 1 science teacher who would get mad and do stuff like that.

Pretty sure this is like "just put on a nice suit and go in and ask for the hiring manager." If it's not on the official transcript, the college takes a huge liability risk in making decisions based on some rando's phone call.

A teacher this vindictive should be removed from the classroom.
