Why is there another teacher work day?

Anonymous
The calendars are already scheduled for the next two school years. (See the fcps wesite). What is the likelihood of them changing schedules because of constituents’ complaints? Does the school board have the power to change the calendars? I honestly don’t know. I would very much prefer a longer summer to little-celebrated holidays (in the U.S. where we live) off - especially those that happen in the middle of the week. I do think there is such a thing as “too” politically correct.

It’s astounding how many posters here love to pick on teachers.

It’s a bunch of dudes with disappointing endowments (financial and otherwise) and the women trying to please them. They have no real value to offer the world, so they spend their time crapping on people who actually do the work while they’re hopping on a quick call to go over the deck for the deliverables.

Look at April. Student holiday Friday 4/10 after being off for spring break and work day through Monday 4/6.

Not only do we have two more days off next week, but some schools also have a three‑hour early release on Wednesday. It’s unbelievable. How many hours and days of lost instruction are we going to tolerate before someone acknowledges the impact on kids?

They just had an entire week off.

Ah yes, because they definitely knew we’d have a snow week when they approved this calendar two years ago.

Maybe the calendar shouldn't have unnecessary holidays during a time of the year known to have weather closures.

Because we have to take off for... Lunar New Year.

Most Asian parents value education and want their kids in school, so this one is real puzzler.

Gotta be woke though.

I completely agree.

And Lunar New Year is not even a thing here in America.

We asians want our kids in school, not taking an unnecessary day off for a holiday that we don't celebrate here in our country. It is a performative day off forced on all of FCPS by woke warriors.

If they bothered to ask any of us asians about it, 99.9999% of us would have said to keep the kids in school that day.

Can you please contact the school board and tell them this, and ask your Asian friends/family to contact them too? The FCPS decision makers seem to assume what various groups want in terms of holidays and recognition. Maybe if they hear from enough people, they will realize they are out of step with what is actually wanted by the people they think they are recognizing/supporting with this.

LOLOLOL, you must be new here. They simply do not care.

Obviously they do care or they would not have put a million holidays into the calendar. Maybe if the hear from the people they think they are helping, they will realize some of them were a misguided effort at inclusion.

I’m not sure putting those holidays in the calendar was a response to prevailing preferences among FCPS constituents.

They’re not losing instructional hours because we have such a long school year and a short summer. We pay for these breaks with our summer vacation.

Once your kid hits middle or high school, you will realize how insignificant elementary school actually is. It’s comical to see all the elem school parents freak out about missing what is essentially daycare. I wish we had taken more family vacations during the school year in elementary school. Grades are subjective and do not count.

Absolutely 100%.

Parents could homeschool their kids through the elementary curriculum in two years. It’s all so performative.

So half of you complain about too many work days and the other have complain that teachers aren’t getting grading done. Hmmm.
