Wait this is a joke, right? That is not actually happening, right?

Nope. It really is happening. He’s adding carrots (special ed) 6.3 edamame for something else.

I wish I could say it was. I get trying to have personality but this is tone deaf to me, given the seriousness of this topic and the challenges the system is facing.

Many staff were informed this week, before the holidays, that their positions were being cut next school year. This includes many PPWs (social workers), so I agree... Incredibly time deaf and seems disingenuous considering the supposed "priorities."

Proposing $1.9 million in targeted summer school focused on math and literacy camps. That's actually not a bad idea.

Also, $1.7 million in additional security allocations.

So that's the $11 million in savings he was proposing. Yikes....

Taylor is asking for $179 million above what MCPS asked for last year.

Will the County Council roll over and give what he's asking for again?

I am now casting this onto the family room tv. This salad metaphor and making is ridiculous.

Special ed is being completely dismantled too. All supervisor positions are being eliminated, which may sounds good on its face, but these are the people who have been providing direct support to schools. They're going to make more director positions. I don't understand the decision to take away people who are supporting schools to replace them with higher level admin. I guess the idea is that adding resource sped teachers in elementaries and a handful of extra people on the cross functional teams will be enough?? They're losing so many dedicated, smart people because they came in with a "special ed in MCPS is broken so we're going to disregard anything the veterans here say and force them out." The problem with special ed has always been a lack of resources, this is just going to exacerbate it.

Oh this sounds very unfortunate. What exactly is he proposing to do to special ed funding? Redistribution to more admin? Total cuts? Could you elaborate a bit more since you know so well.

That's about all we know. Everyone in special ed is on edge wondering if they'll still be serving students in their current positions next year or if they'll be pushed into something else. Some may go back to teaching, some may retire, some might have to take a RTSE role. I can it'll you no one wants to be on those cross functional teams- they're truly a joke and most of the people on them don't know what they're doing.

Is there any written information provided on the budget yet or just this meeting?

That's about right for inflation, so hopefully they will.

Tell me more. As a parent, I suspected they were nothing but hot air but I'd love some tangible evidence to throw back at the MCPS people who love to throw out the Cross-Functional Teams as the answer to all our school's woes. Even though I have yet to see evidence of a single problem they've solved.
