No, they're for people who value them. The original thread was started by a woman (I'M A DOCTOR!) whose comments make it clear that she didn't value custom drapes, so people responded to her complaints by telling her not to get them and just go for RH, PB, etc. |
When my parents were setting up their home it was simply what you did. So there were more design professionals who helped you do it. Recently, we did update the drapes in my parents' home and I can assure you that they didn't pay 15K. They were modest, modern roman shades with a custom fabric. It's about your priorities. And yes, my parents paid at least 200K total to get their first floor (including kitchen) re-done. Certainly more than they paid for any car. But, again, priorities. |
Not Drapegate? Blinds-sided by the cost of curtains |
I LOVE YOU. |

IKEA-best prices for curtains
Costco-best place to order custom insulated shades |
Is there house worth $20 million? My house cost $1.6 million. I can’t imagine spending more than $10-$15,000 total for the whole house to have window treatments. It’s just about the ratio. |

Literally laughed out loud. |
I'm calling it. Drapegate. |
dcum is SUPER parochial but actually people are out there doing things dcum can’t imagine all the time! You start to wonder if maybe there’s a problem with our imaginations. |

I have not used them but have driven by this place:
https://www.designerworkroom.net/services I have used Etsy and Rockville Interiors. Rockville Interiors is pricey, but their work is excellent |
| I’m ordering blinds for my new house. They were kind of expensive but necessary and we didn’t want to install them ourselves. But I’ll go back later and put up curtains. Is there something wrong with store bought curtains? They aren’t very cheap anymore either. Nothing is cheap anymore. |
Of course not! It just means you're a little limited in terms of lengths, fabrics, and interlining. Most of the time, it seems like the cost of store bought lined and pleated panels is not that different from if you had them made with the same fabric. And you can't get interlining, which really adds so much to to the look of them imo. But in general, no, of course there's nothing wrong with them. |
I remember reading the original thread and thinking “what does being an OBGYN have to do with this discussion at all? Does this woman shoehorn the fact that she is a doctor into every conversation humanly possible? |
We have gorgeous (IMO at least… which is the only that matters) curtains from Ballard Designs but still needed to pay $50/panel for custom hemming so they hit right at the floor. At the time I thought I was being ridiculous but as the years have passed it’s been worth the investment - curtains don’t wear out like a couch or rug I think the OG thread changed me as a person and now I totally notice these things and just pass it off as a me thing |
