Also, less competitive schools have rollign admissions, so you can have an acceptance locked in (with scholarship) to take the pressure off and still apply ED to other schools.

In the end, what makes a school great is the amount of endowments it has. If you take a look at various rankings, the schools having the highest endowments are always ranked high. There is a reason HYPMS are always T5. And there is a reason for SWAP.

Once a school has financial issues, inevitably it will decline in reputation, quality, and more importantly student experience. Best wishes to Chicago.

Of course it was. Nowadays people naturally understand that what makes a school great is how many applicants they turn away, but in the olden days people had this quaint old-fashioned notion that what made a school great was the quality of the students it attracted and the quality of the education they received while there.
