If Barrel Jeans are Wrong, I Don’t Want to be Right

For the last 40 years, wearing jeans that fit closely enough to show off your butt was the fashion, and I definitely participated in it. I have a good butt. Even now, I can put on an old pair of bootcut or skinny jeans and think "yes, my butt looks good in these."

I just don't care. My butt also looks good in leggings or joggers, which are more comfortable than tight jeans, so if I want to show off my butt, I can wear those. But when I'm wearing jeans or more formal pants, I am loving the looser, less body-hugging styles, which I think look cool and relaxed with the benefit of being so much more comfortable. I'm in my 40s. I'm married. I'm not on the dating market and most days my goal is not "sexy" it's "pulled together, smart, fashionable."

I do not care that you can no longer see my butt in these jeans. I already know what it looks like.

Nope, that ain't it. They're just plain ugly.

It just looks like your knees are swollen/injured. Weird cut.

This too will pass.

#Facts.

But thank you for wearing them. You all make me look at least 10x better without even trying 🤭

This criticism doesn't make sense because why would you assume someone's legs fill their pants. When you see someone wearing tapered joggers, do you assume they have big thighs? When you see someone in a straight cut jeans or pants, do you assume they don't have knees? When you see someone in widely pants, do you assume they have giant elephant legs?

It's okay to wear clothes that are not skin tight, and we should all just assume other people's bodies have the normal proportions under their clothes.

This! They look so bad. Just get regular wide leg jeans

I’m 5’ 3” and these are the ones I have:

https://www.madewell.com/p/womens/more-sizes/petite/petite-jeans-for-women/the-petite-darted-utility-barrel-leg-jean/NY069/?ccode=DM7793

I tried the regular size in store first, but there was no way, the proportions and length were so far off that I thought, barrel jeans are not for me. But I was intrigued enough to order in a petite size and I was amazed at the difference, everything fell into place and they fit and look exactly as intended. Couldn’t be happier with them.

I have these (not in petite) in the Denver wash and I get compliments on them all the time. I love how good they look with just an Oxford shirt and a belt.

To the PP who asked about shoes, I wear mine with fitted Chelsea boots in the winter, sandals in the summer.

They look like painter's pants from the 70's

I'm not being a B when I say this but yes! They look great on cute little girls. My 12 yr old and her friends rock them. I also love them on petite Asian women I see around here. My big ass could never make them work.

Anyone trashing these jeans is seriously out of style. They are so mainstream that even cheap brands like J Crew make them.

And no one things you look stylish in your jegging skinny jeans.

This. You don't have to love them and you definitely don't have to wear them, but this the direction jeans are going in.

What's funny is the people screaming about them now and clinging to skinny jeans will be wearing barrel jeans and dad jeans in 10 years when fashion has moved on.

That's how this works.

I found these barrel shaped pants that they call painter’s pants. Mid rise, slightly cropped on me- I love them.

I love them. I haven't loved any style pf pants in so long, so I am just fully embracing the barrel. I only wear flat shoes and a slight cropped barrel looks great with sneakers, loafers or ankle boots that reach the hem.
