Haha. OP here and yes, it’s driving me crazy. I mean clearly this is a kid that should just non binding apps but he doesn’t want to give up the ED admission boost. Thank you all for your comments. Very helpful! And I feel better knowing that the kids have until Feb to make decisions. I was mainly worried bc Fall of Freshman year seems way to early to figure out roommates for the next year! |

“The un-demolished house in the lower left corner of the top webcam is the Raoul Wallenberg house, which will be moved next to the Arthur Miller house.”
It’s very fitting that these two Michigan legends, who both attended in the mid ‘30s, would have their houses placed next to each other. |
That doesn't seem like a fun college experience |
The vast majority of undergrads live on or near the campus. With about 35,000 undergraduates students in A2, there will be some that don’t live within walking distance. I’m sure that happens at every major university. |

My DC graduated a few years ago but managed to work out housing (albeit expensive) pretty easily. DC was in the frat house sophomore year so that was easy. Then lived in a nice apartment very close to campus junior/senior year. One year in a 4 bedroom, the next in a 6 bedroom. Leases were for the bedroom but it was still a defined group of friends in the apt. Downside is 12 month leases and not much of a sublease market in summer.
Michigan was well worth it from my perspective (as the payer of the bills!). |
| Also sophomores can opt to be in the dorms if they want, although most don’t. I understand those who wanted to got spaces. Should be easier when the new dorms are ready. |
This. Most students are not interested in staying in the dorms after their first year. |
Keep in mind that this is a state flagship. There are kids that need to economize a lot because there is no parental safety net. Having to take a city bus to campus is not a big deal. Also consider that such a person likely has roommates doing the same thing. To the extent that having a college apartment and "roomies" is part of the college experience, it doesn't matter if it's a bus, bike, or walking trip away. Some kids drive from home in fall semester and get cheap sublets for spring. These are all rational ways to lower the cost of attendance. None interfere with football Saturdays, lol. |
Do most freshmen get assigned to North Campus? |
No. Most students are not assigned to north campus. Majority of students are on central campus. |
No, but it is a real possibility. We don't have the numbers that reflect sophomores removed from the equation, but for total rooms, the breakdown is appx: North - 20% Hill - 33% Central - 42% (This does include one dorm that is primarily sophomores, so the number is actually lower) Other - 5% (these are two random dorm options which are listed as central, but really are not) |
Presumably some engineering school students want to be on North Campus, right? And with the new self-selection process for dorm rooms, I’m guessing only a small subset end up there involuntarily, and I bet many/most of them are late committers or admitted off the waitlist. |
| Engineering would be the largest, but some SMTD, Stamps, or Taubman students might want north campus too. Some SI stuff is in the process of moving to north campus, but I don't know if that would tip anyone to want to live there for that. |
| PP. ^ I now see that the SI stuff moving to north campus is graduate not under. Sorry. |
No. That is not how it played out. By the end of day 2, females only had the option of North Campus. The challenge with living on N, just like at many other schools who do this, is that you have to take a bus for 10-15 minutes to get to the action. Yes, they have a union, gym and cafeteria on North, but the main activities are on Central. If they want to explore Ann Arbor - bus first. If they want to go to the frats or other night lide venue - bus first. If they want to spend their time in the law quad or hang on the diag - bus first. It's not the end of the world, obviously, but a lot of engineering students also chose to live on central and take the bus for classes b/c you spend more time outside class than in. |
