Basically u and v had different sounds but shared the same character “v.” Sort of like how “c” can be different sounds. There was no “u” character. Or if there was, it was just the same as “v.”
At some point, vv or uu indicated a new different sound (the w sound). And then at another point v and u separated in their distinct sounds and characters. vv or uu standardized to “w” over time. But in handwriting, if you think about it, some people write it pointy like vv, and some write it curvy uu, so it’s still out there! |
