Men with kids who do this have outsourced all parental responsibility to the other parent, who was probably also responsible for parenting the man while they were together.

I know a couple older permanently single guys who have always lived with roommates. They're in a sort of bohemian low paying field (think like environmental research, seasonal park ranger, that kind of thing) and like to have a low maintenance, low cost of living and company. Also aren't around all the time so don't want to invest in a home. I think it makes sense for them!
