I am a sub at the high school level, and you’re correct. It is glorified babysitting, and it’s a glorious way to make extra money.

I’ve been afraid to take a high school assignment because I don’t want to deal with behaviors. So the kids in general do their work or can they be mean?

I prefer ES but the couple of times I have sub in HS, I told the kids "You know where your work is in Schoology. Do it, don't do it, I do not care. If I come around, don't have something on your computer that you should not. ie: porn or online gambling. Do not bother other students who are working. Let me know if you need or want help." Mostly I was there to authorize bathrooms passes.

If you are a substitute, how are you seeing your pay statement? It seems we have to go through uConnect, but there doesn't seem to be a way to access it unless you have VPN or are at a school with a school laptop.

Unfortunately, when they changed the VPN, I can no longer log in so I haven't seen any pay statements. I keep track of my hours and am able to figure out what my take home pay is. So far, I haven't had any issues with incorrect pay. When I needed my W-2 for taxes, there was a way to request an email copy.

Ok. That’s inconvenient, but thanks. I’ll try to remember to look when I’m in a school and have a laptop.

Can anyone give insight on the mandatory 2 hour orientation? I have completed all of the other steps in the hiring process (to my knowledge) but cannot get ahold of anyone in the Substitute Employment Office to sign up for the orientation.

They’ll contact you when it’s been offered. When I subbed with FCPS, it was a couple months after I submitted my application.

Is the orientation paid?

Also the orientation dates I wanted to attend are already filled up - will they care if I show up without booking?
