did your kid take (or will they take) a bike to college?

Yes. Delaware. Rides it all the time. Not stolen, obviously.

One did. Two did not.

Depends on the campus and location.

DD plans to bring a beater bike to W&M, which doesn’t seem like a very bike friendly campus. She’ll need to lock it up outside unless she can find covered storage somewhere, and there are lots of warnings of impoundment if she parks it anywhere but a bike rack. I’m not sure it’s worth it, but she wants to try.

I spent all of college on my bike but that was a different era.

Mine was a different era too. I loved riding my bike for fun not to classes. It was stolen after three months

I forgot to add for girls be aware of creeps in cars. One time I had to pull over where a high school kid was on the sidewalk and asked him to pretend we were friends. The guy who was following me in a car left after that. He kept riding around blocks and slowly drive by me.

Just be aware of your surroundings and notice odd behavior. You don’t have to be fearful just alert.

My rising W&Msenior has taken a nice bike with her every year since freshman year. Uses it all the time and loves having it. Has always had someplace to keep it during breaks. Not sure about the details. Never had an issue with theft. But Williamsburg is not a hotbed of crime. She’s always lived on campus and has found that bike plus bus (plus Amtrak home) much easier and more convenient than trying to deal with a car on campus and Williamsburg parking.

Yes. Our kid has a car but bikes to class from their off campus apartment because parking is a pain and the campus isn’t hilly.

Poster 8:28 here. Our kid is also at W&M, a senior. No issues parking the bike and lots of good off campus places to bike.

Depends on how bike friendly the school is.

No they (i have 2 going this Fall) are not taking bikes but there are rentable bikes on campus, a free bus into the city (and back) and everything is walkable as well.

Welcome to Europe.
