Get a short hair if you're worried about cleanliness. All the long hairs we've had invariably have had issues with poo getting stuck in the rear end fur, especially if diarrhea strikes. |
In my experience as a lifelong cat owner and a part-time cat sitter:
Male orange cats are the friendliest--almost dog-like in their affection Female calicos are very unpredictable and can lash out. Would never have another. Tabbies of either sex are pretty much the same. Either way, spaying/neutering early is the key to avoiding the worst of problematic behaviors. Getting any sort of cat "breed" is a waste of money, IMHO. Just look for a medium-sized, short-haired cat that is friendly and seems to like lots of people. |
Whatever it is, keep it indoors please! |
Just make sure you can still afford it 11 years down the road, unlike that other idiot who posted. |
The cat who chooses you or one of your family members. |

Nope, let it roam and live free. |
Congratulations on wanting to add a cat to your home! Personally, we have one of each and it’s been great. The female, Lola, is a total Queen who is worshipped by Pickles, the male cat. They are both fixed so no chance of having little ones. They act like sister and brother so they generally get along but sometimes beat each other up.
Highly recommend going to Mount Purrnon (MTP) in Old Town Alexandria or Meow Maison in DC. The cats are all from rescues and available for adoption. MTP has trivia nights, wine tastings, yoga etc… so you can really your prospective cat’s personalities in different settings. |
Wait till you meet dogs. |
