What is your level of education, OP? How religious was your family growing up?

I always wonder whether hardcore Communists have some false memory of a country where Communism was a great success.

They wrote a book about it, Utopia.

"Many people mistakenly believe there are 52 US states, possibly due to the inclusion of Washington D.C. or Puerto Rico in their understanding of US territories, or perhaps due to a misremembered image of the US flag with 52 stars in a Star Trek episode."

No.

There's a SONG!

But you can sing it either way-mayer or meyer and make it work

No, it is spelled out in the song. My mom wouldn't buy bologna but I wanted it so badly because of this ad jingle, which played incessantly and those of us of a certain age can sing from memory.

My bologna has a first name,
It’s O-S-C-A-R.
My bologna has a second name,
It’s M-A-Y-E-R.
Oh I love to eat it everyday,
And if you ask me why I’ll say,
’Cause Oscar Mayer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A.

If you watch this video, it sounds like he's possibly saying "E" when he spells out Mayer. I can understand the confusion, so much for having a cute three-year-old spell in a commercial.

There was a great podcast (it might still exist but when the hosts changed I stopped listening)- You’re Wrong About. Deep dives into things we have collectively misremembered and it’s fun to go down that rabbit hole.

Anonymous wrote:The "Mandela Effect" is pretty explainable. There have been interesting studies on this. Human memory is actually pretty poor. Often when you are "remembering" something, especially from further back, you are actually having a memory...of a memory--not the event itself! And it changes each time. Writing about an event can change your memory of it, as can photographs. Our memories are VERY fallible.

In the Mandela Effect examples, it's usually something in popular culture from childhood that has obviously just been misquoted over time. People are also very suggestible, so if something is misquoted or if they are prompted with an inaccurate memory, they may "remember" it slightly incorrectly.

I once went down a rabbit hole on the Mandela Effect reddit and overall, I found it kind of silly. (Still kind of fun, but also ridiculous that some people seemed to think there was some conspiracy or that their memory from 30+ years ago must be perfect.) Many of the false memories were from decades ago, from childhood, so course they're probably not remembering something correctly or they probably assumed something was spelled a certain way (like the "Berenstein" bears example or Loony "Toons") when they were children.

None of that explains that so many of us--so many--grew up spelling dilemna. And studied the Book of Psalms. I am not OP--and these were the very two first things that came to mind when I saw the post title.

As already stated on this thread, it’s called the book of PSALMS because it’s more than one psalm. Do you know what a psalm is?

OP is just breathtakingly stupid. Don't blame any effect. Maybe Dunning-Kruger. Also, dilemna? REALLY? DILEMNA? How stupid. It doesn't look right.

NP here. I too always spelled dilemma, dilemna. At some point in my life, I was taught that. I don't know anything about the Mandela affect, but as an adult, when spellcheck started fixing the word for me, I was blown away. My elementary, middle, and high school teachers definitely all spelled it dilemna. Maybe it's a regional thing? Any of you "dilemna" spellers from PA? BTW, there are loads of words that "don't look right," with silent letters. I mean, off the top of my head, one that I can think of, hhmm, PSALM.

I don't know if this falls under the category of ME, or maybe something that has changed over the years without my noticing. When did the direction for inserting cash into the ATM change?

I was at Capital One recently and had a crazy time inserting bills into the ATM only to realize I was doing it wrong. Since when do you insert bills horizontally instead of vertically? I've inserted money millions of times. Is this something new?

Count me as another person who was sure it was dilemNa. I know that doesn’t make any sense, but I don’t remember being corrected until spell check caught it in college.
