That's antiquated and just not true. I accepted a counter offer years ago from my employer and have moved up with the company since.

OP I experienced a similar dilemma and while the pay raise I was seeking did not come through, I was able to negotiate for a very large quantity of aluminum wrapping foil (nearly a full pallet) at a substantially discounted rate. Vive la difference!

If you decide to go with the counteroffer, get it in writing that the raise will be immediate. I've heard of stories where others were promised raises by their bosses and those raises didn't come through.
