Why is the school year longer than the 2005-09 years?

The first year after this range is where things start going crazy! In 2009-2010 the school year went from August 24-June 22 for students, August 17-June 22 for returning teachers and August 13-June 22 for new teachers! Without half days combined with a holiday on June 18 the 2026-27 school year could be similarly long under the current calendars.
