I also loved:
The Ugly Cry (funny and heart breaking)
Hunger (Roxane Gay is an incredible writer)
Somebody's Daughter

A little less dramatic but still great was Molly Shannon's memoir. Also Trevor Noah's (but do the audiobook if you can because he does the voices of everyone in the book and it's so good).

Not OP but just finished Sound of Gravel based on your recommendation. So heart-wrenching. I would totally read a follow up book by the same author.

His mother (who was Black) could not be seen with him in public because it was against the law since they were different races. It was hilarious and heartbreaking and very insightful.

I inhaled this book, one of my favorites that O read this year.

It’s not as good as some of these, but “wanted, Toddler’s personal assistant” has some similar themes.

Good Morning, Monster was excellent. Not a memoir exactly but a therapist tells the "heroic" stories of 5 patients who are faced with issues in adulthood due to suffering abuse or negligence during childhood. The full title is Good Morning, Monster: A Therapist Shares Five Heroic Stories of Emotional Recovery. Well-written. I'd like to read the therapist/author's own memoir at some point.

Yes and listen to the audio version. He reads it himself and his accents and speaking other languages makes it even better.
