Any parents with students at Saint Joseph's University outside of Philly and/or Elon University in NC?

If child happy there, what accommodations might be like, general campus life, professors, diversity, etc. All the college lists (Niche, forbes, us news, etc.) are making me batty and I thought I would come to the source!!

Thank you in advance!!

I don't know St Joes but I know 2 kids headed to Elon. White, bland, wealthy. But "nice." Feels like a pleasant school for kids who need a college degree from any college, if you catch my drift - would-be Kindergarten teachers, nurses, and boys going to work at Dad's used car business.

The kid I know was a HS valedictorian who is planning on HS. She was an excellent student. She chose Elon over many higher ranked schools, including UMD.

“Planning on HS” should have been planning on a MD. Not sure how I managed that…

I've heard Elon gives huge scholarship to the very top applicants who demonstrate that they want to go there. Probably not the reality for most B students, but I think they do give merit aid.

I have a couple of friends who teach at St. Joe's. The place is very student-focused; it's filled with nice kids who are happy to be there. SJU is on the rise with its recent acquisition of the University of the Sciences, which adds all sorts of health fields (pharmacy, I'm sure, PT, OT, etc. I think). They are much better poised to face the coming demographic challenges than other small(ish) private universities.

I do get the sense the students mostly come from the region, and many are Catholic, but it's not a commuter school. More diverse than you might think. Great alumni base in/ near PHL.

St Joe's is a nice Jesuit school, just not as competitive as it's siblings like Holy Cross, Georgetown and B.C.. Sister-in-law who is MD went to there. Their Food Marketing major is highly regarded.

Burlington, NC is crappy? Seems OK to me, and you can easily get to Greensboro, Chapel Hill, and so forth. I can think of worse locations.

The "counselor" who posted that needs to just go hide at this point. Most likely not actually a counselor and just a random parent with vested interests.

I mean in terms of bad area, Temple’s got to be in the running for the worst.

As a NC native, I was like "Huh? Burlington is crappy?" Damn, y'all don't know crappy.

OK, and that has nothing to do with this conversation?

How so? The PP listed Penn, Drexel, and LaSalle as the schools in Philadelphia that are in "bad areas." It is definitely germane to the conversation to add that Temple is in a crappy part of the city (arguably more so than the three that were listed by PP). That's like one of the things it's best known for, lol.

Meh, not really. Temple is in a bad area of Philly.

Temple actually slipped my mind - was thinking of private schools, given the original post. Definitely a rough area, but it is slowly improving at least.

Is there a shuttle system from St. Joe's to Philadelphia for the students?

So you like shitting on Philly - cool. St. Joes isn't anywhere near Temple and "Lol" it's shitty. You're worse than the prior poster.
