Can you smell mice?

If you can smell them, that is an infestation. Very unsanitary. You need to call and exterminator STAT. Hanta virus is real and can kill you and your family.

Rat nests have a strong smell. Also dead mice.

Yeah they are nimble little creatures and able to squeeze through holes smaller than that.

Hardware cloth is what one seeks. Finer mesh screen can be chewed open by mice.

Practice. Maybe you got a bad batch. Little rough sanding on the arm/catch will roughen them up and make them harder to trip.
