Does being the child of a celebrity give you a leg up with elite schools?

On top of what everyone said, they can get private tutors, coaches etc etc to make sure their motivated kid is the best at what they want. So, their resume may actually be very strong, but the celebrity status and money makes it all possible.

Years ago, my brother was accepted to Harvard years ago based on academics. Sadly, given how poor we were, Harvard still didn’t offer enough in Financial Aid, grants, etc.

Funny- a semi-famous friends daughter is at Duke. It also helps that they go to elite private schools with lots of tutors, good guidance counselors, etc and can pay full ride.

All of Seinfeld's kids go to Duke, which seems random to me. I don't know why. I always thought of Duke as a preppy conservative Southern school...which doesn't seem Seinfeldian. But OK.

Helps. Vanderbilt has a lot of celeb kids. Apple Martin, George stephanopoulos daughter, Mark Cubans daughter all go there

Agree a kid would need a baseline level of motivation and IQ to get into a great school. The school doesn't want a famous kid to drop out.

Didn't both of Rob Lowe's sons go to Duke? At least one of them did.

At Brown it's easier to take lots of liberal arts classes without science distribution classes, which appeals to kids who know they want to go into the arts. Also there's an extensive pass-fail system.

Carnegie Mellon is actually a pretty hard school, even if you do liberal arts there. Impressive that Suri is there.

This^. If you attended best schools, traveled everywhere, had sports coaches, music gurus, acting opportunities, published books written by editors, had prestigious internships, hun around wealthy and connected, your grades and scores (which also can be manipulated) doesn't matter as much.

These schools LOVE the kids of well-known journalists. There are many other examples, but I have a friend who’s ex was prominent correspondent on a network (back when everyone watched network news) and every single one of their dozen kids and grandchildren went to Stanford or Harvard. I can assure you that they weren’t all naturally brilliant.
