Takoma Park-like neighborhood?

Liberal, walkable, intellectual (Hood College right there) and Baker Park something straight Olmsted. Fine schools too!

I like Frederick but it's not 40 minutes to downtown even on the best day.

We now have three kids, ages 8, 5, and 6 months. We’re looking for a year-long house rental in DC/DMV for $4-6k/month. We currently live in Brooklyn, NY, and will return to Brooklyn next summer, so don’t need to worry about middle/high schools.

When we were on H Street we loved visiting friends and the farmer’s market in Takoma Park, so we initially looked there, but just learned that our kids would have to go to separate schools in TKPK (for K & 4th grade), and we'd like them in the same school.

Our wish list:
- a standalone house so we can let the kids, who’ve always lived in apartments, not worry about noise
- a back yard, ideally fenced, grassy, leafy
- commute to downtown DC <40 minute by transit, or could possibly drive
- walking distance <15min to a decent K-5 public school
- sidewalks/walkability so I can head with baby to a park or playground, groceries, etc
- a leafy neighborhood or being close to a park

Can you suggest a neighborhood or neighborhoods out there that fit the bill? Thanks in advance.

Don’t change your mind for that, the 2 schools are 1 min walk apart, you can walk with both kids and do same drop off or drive and park at the library and drop both off. It is almost as if it was the same campus.

Also a Brooklyn transfer here. Takoma is the best !

University Park, Hyattsville or Old Greenbelt if you are willing to look in PG County.

Shepherd Park is a good option.

We live in DC and love it and would love in Brooklyn if we lived in NYC.

but if I were to move to the suburbs, it would absolutely be Takoma Park. No other suburbs/suburban parts of DC have the same vibe.

Stokes is a charter, and one of the most sought-after. Those spots are all full and the waitlist is miles long.

That said, Brookland is lovely.

Manor Park was the first neighborhood I thought of. Brightwood Park and 16 Street Heights.

Hyattsville is pretty great as well. Lower price points than Takoma Park, but still loads of Bungalows, parks, and a great little downtown.

Also Sligo Creek ES, Woodlin ES in Silver Spring

My kids walked to school on their own through 8th grade. There are lots of houses--some relatively affordable and some not--that are an easy walk to the elementary schools, even for kindergarteners.

+1, there are a lot of good neighborhoods but this would be a bad reason to eliminate TKPK.

+2. But if this is still somehow your deal breaker, look at the adjacent East Silver Spring elementary school, which is K-5.

Yes - and this neighborhood feeds to TPMS and Blair. Lots of different kinds of houses and walkable to both downtown Takoma and DTSS. We love it.

Another +1 for the neighborhoods that feed into ESS. It's a very short drive to downtown TKPK. There's the area closest to downtown SS but also Sligo Park Hills bordering the park.

The best area like Takoma Park is Takoma Park itself.

Yes, but there is talk of renovating the grade 3-5 school in the hext few years, possibly bussing students to other schools in Montgomery county

But OP is coming for one year. Is there talk of renovations this fall?

Forest Glen is a lovely neighborhood to look into. What metro stop are you commuting to?

This. Just live on the DC side for the one year if the different elementary schools is an issue. Both Takoma and Whittier are good schools.

People here are throwing in wild choices. Definitely do not move to Forest Glen if walk ability is any part of your criteria. It's a perfectly fine neighborhood if you want to be near the metro and driving to things but it's wedged next to one of the worst stretches of a terrible stroad right off a highway exit/entrance.
