+1 and What Went Wrong is another very entertaining movie podcast |
Culture Study, deep dive (academic research style) into entertainment topics.
She's currently doing a series on what makes local culture, starting with Boston. They're fun and lighthearted but also go into deeper topics like "why hasn't the city made more of an investment to rid itself of its macho and racist image?" |
You're Dead to Me (Radio 4/BBC) |
Love British Scandal. There's American Scandal too, but it's not nearly as good. |
+2! |
So neither of you actually read the OP where she said she already listens to Smartless. |
I don't understand the appeal of Smartless at all. It's three not particularly interesting hosts on a zoom call with random celebrity. I feel like I'm reliving covid every time I try. Too many voices, and all a little needy. I like most of the Conan podcasts bc there's one primary voice and you have a genuine moment with the guests. And the secondary person is genuinely funny and knows her role. So following this thread bc the other similar podcasts all sound pretty lame, even the new Amy Poelher one. |
I absolutely love “the moth” from the NPR show. I’m an artist and love to do my work while listening to people’s stories- I laugh, I cry, and I feel connected to these strangers and their story’s. Totally recommend. No politics, no murder, no agenda- just spoken stories that often resonate deeply with me. |
Pop Culutre Happy Hour from NPR - it's short and it gives you a broad smattering of what's happening in pop culture - movies, TV, streaming, a little book (but not a lot), a little celebrity (but not much), music. Heavy on TV and movies.
For example, the topics of the last few shows, starting today and working back: The Met Gala The Four Seasons Thunderbolts* The TV show I'd like to Live in Why we love TV weddings Etoile Summer guide I also like the Ringer, which is sports, pop culture, and nerd culture (sci-fi, gaming, marvel ,etc). They have one called Prestige TV and it's recaps/analysis of some of the top TV out there (I listened to their White Lotus episodes). Also Tom & Lorenzo's Pop Style Opinionfest - Tom&Lorenzo are a married gay couple who started as Project runway fan bloggers waaaay way back in the day, but are now sophisticated analyzers of a large swath of pop culture. These shows give me ideas of things to watch/read/listen to or help me understand those things, and keep me sort of up to date on what's gonig on in pop culture so I feel like I can talk about it at work or whereever and not be left out without an opinion of the latest thing. |
Armchair expert and armchair anonymous ! With dax Shepard and monica padman.
Excellent ! |
Family Trips with the Meyers Brothers. Seth and Josh Meyers interview people about (unsurprisingly) family trips growing up. My favorite is Katherine Hahn. The listener episodes are also great. |
