Of course OP can ask any question here esp since s/he is not from the US.
But it needs to be fair payback when someone comments "in my country we do X" and they never name their freaking country. You have to ID your country and answer honest questions too. Can't be all that if you're here.

I never compared my country with the us. I live in the us for 25 years and is a specific question related to privates schools in dc. I think it’s fair game to ask these questions. Specially since several people post in this thread.

Sure. Makes sense to force me to disclose private information.

If grandparents are likely to get hit with estate tax (so >$20m ish), it’s very common and even smart. Private school and also college.

It’s quite a loophole.

Am I forced to disclose my citizenship as the previous poster suggested? No. Are you forced to respond to my posts? No. I think it’s super clear.

This. We can afford the tuition, but SIL cannot afford niece and nephew's college. MIL is paying for SIL's kids' college, and to even things out she is paying for our kids' private school. Since she pays the tuition directly, it does not count toward lifetime gift limits.

It's definitely a loophole, but it's between DH and his mom how he wants to deal with his inheritance.

Do parents actually tell their friends that the grandparents are paying tuition? I would never divulge that kind of financial assistance.

But it seems to be widespread.

Why not? Who cares?

So probably financial aid is going to those families that receive family aid.

Yes.

We’ve been in private for years and only two people have divulged to us grandparents are helping. But I think it’s fairly common - when two people who have jobs that add up to less than 400k but have been sending kids to private since elementary school, I think it’s likely. Most families of that income are not starting till middle or high school.

You just post a question on this thread more than most and then whenever you get a response you don’t like you have an insulting an often sarcastic response to that. You aren’t really asking an honest question, as you’ve already formed an opinion that you never change, so interacting with you is pointless and frustrating. It would be nice if you stopped creating these threads.
