FDA is going to hire contract workers to do the job of those laid off

Exactly. And probably illegal per the FAR which requires government subject matter expert oversight and requirements to do the work.

Well when a reality show star becomes President and a foreign ‘inventor’ can do whatever they want in any agency what do you expect

At my agency, it’s really difficult to hire TPCs to perform inherently governmental functions. Then again, with this administration, I guess anything is allowed.

To the contrary. Hiring contractors for non-governmental duties allows for greater flexibility in staffing, accompanied by lower benefits costs.

+1 Fewer longtime federal workers with golden parachutes.

You guys are morons. You’ve bought into a massive lie. Federal workers don’t have golden parachutes or great retirement.

Compared to the average American worker? Yes, they do.

They have 401k like most average workers. In the past they had pensions but they did away with pensions.

You know, American workers should unionize instead of destroying the government. Unions were created to improve worker benefits and conditions. Corporations and the GOP have demonized unions, which is why nothing improves for workers. Corporations DGAF about its employees. They care about profits.

Really? Please name a few, and state the details of their “golden parachutes “. I’ll wait.
If anyone gets “golden parachutes “ it will be the heads of the contracting companies.
Contractors will be paid more than the federal workers that they are replacing. They may end up being exactly the same federal workers that they’re replacing. The only advantage will be the flexibility that goes along with deciding whether or not to renew particular contracts. The disadvantages include higher costs and possibly losing the skills, leadership and institutional memories that go along with having a stable, long term workforce. IMO, such a shift is shortsighted —at best.

As others have said, the key here is to see who gets the contracts and profits from this shift.

The draft documents and emails obtained by CBS News say that the contractors would be given FDA laptops and badges to do their work, which is described as intended "to address the duties that have been performed" by the laid-off staff.

However, the contracting documents also say that the tasks could be completed virtually, suggesting that they would not be subject to the same strict return-to-office requirements that have hamstrung FDA employees for weeks.

I wonder if other agencies will follow suit.

So what was the point of firing everyone....just wanted to be cruel? I mean that checks out with trump.

Cruelty plus profiting from the contracts.

It's like people think federal workers get pensions like it's 1950. Those were done away with decades ago, in the 1990s, and now there is an extremely small relic of a pension and the rest replaced with 401ks like everyone else.

Yes, there are retired feds out there who still get a full pension, but working feds? Only if they've been there 40 years.

Stop being mad at feds and starting being mad at all the corporations and billionaires raking in cash while trying to cut your measley social security.

Maybe we can talk about the golden parachute the military gets.

We’re not going back to the 1950s, or the 1880s, folks. We’re going back to Ancient Greece— contractors will be the new helots.

This is no surprise. This was the goal all along.

Here’s the real question: which of Trump’s cronies is benefitting from this?

Ah c'mon, Obama started the whole contractor conversion. They just wanted to hire immigrants at the staffing companies.

Contractors are remote in other agencies also. They save a bit on parking and not needing offices. It's brilliant really. Now if we can just get the feds to figure out how to operate the conference video cam.

Dont be an idiot. FDA has been using telework for a while , even before the pandemic. Now suddenly Trump forced everybody back to the office even if there is not enough office space or parking and White Oaks is hard to reach with public transportation, just to create hardship. My DH now leaves right after 6am even though we are only few miles away so can be there by 6.20 and find parking and short lines to go into the building.

This all let’s fire government workers for savings is BS for the most stupids of Trump supporters. The intent was to destroy agencies that billionaire republican backers have been hating for a long time, terrorize all federal employees so they execute whatever they are ordered regardless if legal or not, and enrich republican donors with privatizing as much as possible of the federal government. Thousands of people were laid off st FDA with the justification that their jobs were mot needed because already covered by others but now suddenly they need contractors to cover tjose jobs? So why the just laid off people are not called back? They know the job already dont need training and i am sure they would appreciate teleworking again st least a few days a week.

This is just evidence of what we said all along. The cuts snd saving campaign was BS, just cannibalize the government by privatize as much as possible and have a political iron control on anybody else. We will all pay more and have worse services. F$ck MAGA
