If MS don't give homework, how are kids prepared for HS?

Very little homework in MS or HS including in honors and AP classes. Teachers now give a lot of time in class to complete assignments.

Not that I am a fan of hours of homework, but how do kids develop organizational and time management skills if not given homework in preparation for HS? Granted, our MS will have a block schedule which allows time for hw apparently.
TIA!

Most kids are not - either in public schools or private schools.

I was dedicated to my kids education as a SAHM and supplemented, accelerated and enriched at home. I don't think that with a full time jobs and parenthood my children can devote the same amount of care to my future grandkids. We (grandparents) will have to step up in a big way.

My kids were always in the magnet track and mostly were doing homework during class, lunch, on the bus ride home. There was very little homework to bring home - especially for STEM. There was a lot of studying though.

RMIB was actually most work and the hardest magnet. Mainly because it was writing and analusis at very high level.

My kids have a good 2 hrs a night starting in MS. By HS, it was 3 hrs. This was Catholic school. I don’t know any kids in private school who dint have much HW.

Middle school teacher here. They took homework out of the grading system and replaced it with independent assignments. The work is done independently but not necessarily have to be completed at home. Giving homework is very pointless in middle school because most, not everyone, using ai. They just copy the work from there. A lot easier to have students complete the work in class where their technology is being restricted or monitored during this time. OP’s concern was with time management and organizational skills. This two things are still necessary in class. If I give you 30 minutes to complete the essay then you need to use your time wisely and organize your work. During study hall, you need to prioritize what to work on first.

The problem is that class time is still the same as it was when we did homework. You either are cutting content or cutting practice, in order to fit it into class hours. That is a shame.

NP here - my kids are at Westland and hardly ever do HW at home; I am very surprised too, but they tell me they can do most of it at school. Sometimes they have some HW, assignments, but I am surprised how little. And they are in advance math and have good grades.

I was responding to the PP who wrote this- "Most kids are not - either in public schools or private schools." Calm down.

Yup. Lots of illiteracy and no self discipline, or regular old discipline for that matter.

Grades don't mean anything in MCPS.

This. My neighbor’s kid was placed into remedial math and English classes after being in honors math and English in HS. He got mostly As in those classes too. Public schools are committing educational fraud.
