If waitlisted for UTK RD, what does that mean for other southern flagships?

3. Does UTK need more apps because they don’t yield as well as UGA?

They don't need more apps, but they just get more apps. Tennessee happens to be a very popular state and Knoxville is great.

I do know they began taking kids from the wait-list in April last year. I was surprised it was before May 1. So there's a definite chance your kid will hear from them.

Good luck. My kid loves it there.

33% out of state acceptance rate

OP:Thanks, all, for your perspective and knowledge.
FWIW, UTK had the largest application pool in their history: 60,515 this year (completed now with early and regular), with ~ a 24% OOS admission rate. That's on par with several of the UC schools and schools like Villanova. DS isn't the only one in her cohort to get waitlisted or even a no, and she went to a noted private school in the DMV and did well. (I suspect that the lack of multiple APs, not offered in the numbers available at public schools in the area, figures in here for her.)

And to the "Army" poster--believe me, when applying there was first floated to me, I didn't take it seriously. There was a sea change this year about applications to southern schools, but this is also a HUGE change from when I was applying to college.

What’s the yield percentage?

You can always get into Ole Miss and LSU...

Acceptance rate is meaningless until the waitlist is closed. Last year UTK admitted 80% of their waitlist, nearly 5,000 students. That increased the out of state acceptance rate from ~24% to ~33%. The final in-state acceptance rate was ~70%. Final overall acceptance rate was ~42%. Yield was 27%.

Compare to UGA and other universities if you want here- https://www.ivywise.com/blog/college-yield-rates/

Any idea about whether being waitlisted at UTK for regular decision is a marker for decision at, say, UGA?

UGA is one of the schools that really admits a lot of kids in RD that were deferred from Early Action. They are a bit tougher in Early Action, but it all evens out in RD. Not sure your kids numbers, but if he was deferred from UGA EA, he stands a good chance of RD if he is within their medians.

You can’t count on this happening every year if applications increase.
True, but the same applies to UTK, and they really haven't at UGA at a great rate in comparison to some other schools. I believe UGA received 47,000 apps approx this cycle which was only up 12% from last cycle. So an increase for sure, but relatively consistent so I expect a similar admission approach this session. That's a stark contrast to other large highly ranked publics like UF or UT Austin that are now receiving 90,000 plus applications which is crazy.

So, to the OP, just because you were waitlisted at UTK does not mean you are out at UGA RD. Good luck with everything you will know soon. Your kid will be where they are suppose to be regardless.
A 12% YoY increase in apps is huge (and twice UTK's 5.7%).

Sorry, I was comparing it to the increase in schools like UF and UT Austin. Those two are insane at 90,000 plus.
