3. Does UTK need more apps because they don’t yield as well as UGA?
They don't need more apps, but they just get more apps. Tennessee happens to be a very popular state and Knoxville is great. |
33% out of state acceptance rate http://irsa.utk.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/107/2025/02/CDS_2024-2025_C-.pdf |
OP:Thanks, all, for your perspective and knowledge.
FWIW, UTK had the largest application pool in their history: 60,515 this year (completed now with early and regular), with ~ a 24% OOS admission rate. That's on par with several of the UC schools and schools like Villanova. DS isn't the only one in her cohort to get waitlisted or even a no, and she went to a noted private school in the DMV and did well. (I suspect that the lack of multiple APs, not offered in the numbers available at public schools in the area, figures in here for her.) And to the "Army" poster--believe me, when applying there was first floated to me, I didn't take it seriously. There was a sea change this year about applications to southern schools, but this is also a HUGE change from when I was applying to college. |

You can always get into Ole Miss and LSU... |
Acceptance rate is meaningless until the waitlist is closed. Last year UTK admitted 80% of their waitlist, nearly 5,000 students. That increased the out of state acceptance rate from ~24% to ~33%. The final in-state acceptance rate was ~70%. Final overall acceptance rate was ~42%. Yield was 27%.

A 12% YoY increase in apps is huge (and twice UTK's 5.7%). |
Sorry, I was comparing it to the increase in schools like UF and UT Austin. Those two are insane at 90,000 plus. |
