Are these schools reasonable with DS's stats?

I would scrap that list and focus on a solid tier down - look at U of South Carolina, U of Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, if you don't like the South find those equivalents up north.
I advise looking at the scattergrams on Naviance or whatever your school has, which will show his GPA in relation to his peers. I think this will be very enlightening - and whatever you see, it will be harder for an engineering student.

Math 750. Yes, avoiding the south. I don't have a login to Naviance or a code.

Your son will, though. He needs to either give it to you, or sit with you and rake through the stats from the past few years.

This major is a brutally tough admit. And ALL of these schools have risen in prominence in recent years.

GMU and JMU are good bets.

You should aim for niche colleges with strong CS programs. Admissions rates are higher because they are niche, but he'll still need to bring up the GPA if possible.

+1 Start over.

Please suggest something. Most of those don't look like top tier schools to me.

They are, especially for CS.

Don't look at US News. UT Austin for oos computer science? Probably easier to get into an Ivy.

I would add VCu since you're in VA. Ohio State is the only one on your list he has a chance. Possibly try Pitt as a high target

The good news is that it doesn't really matter where you study engineering. Sure, MIT will give you a heads up. But an engineering degree from South Carolina will still get you a great job!

Anonymous wrote:DS wants to major in computer science or engineering. 1350 SAT, will graduate with 5 APs (math, science, foreign language), 3.8 weighted GPA (unweighted 3.5), extra curriculars include 1 varsity sport, one club, and a part time job he's had for years and where he works quite a few hours. We are still hoping he might get that GPA up before the end of the year, but he doesn't seem very motivated. Based on what I usually see on dcum, these stats aren't great, but is the list below reasonable? What should we add?

Virginia Tech
Georgia Tech
UT Austin
U Wisconsin
U Washington Seattle
U Maryland
Ohio State
University of Florida Gainesville
Boston U

Nope. My 4.92/4.0 1580 SAT kid was rejected at GATech.

If you are in MCPS, those stats won't get you into UMD, unless you are from a high FARMs school.

Ohio State is the only one that I think is a good shot.

He needs way more safeties, and I would only keep a few of these as reaches.

I didn't include the safeties on the list, but we have GMU and JMU, and I'm pretty sure he could get into at least one of those.

You really need to do some more research. For computer science, GMU has a minimum 3.5 GPA requirement. It’s at best a target not a safety.

Where did you find this information? It's not at all what I am seeing.

Full pay? You said he is sporty. ED to Lehigh. Also look at University of Denver, CU Boulder and University of Utah.

This is good advice!

Thank you for this. We think RPI would be unlikely, but will definitely check out RIT.

I guess full pay, but privates might be out of reach financially.

What do you think it needs to be to make him a better candidate?

More motivation, so he has a chance for higher grades and higher test scores. Maybe a different major? He's competing with strong, motivated students for potentially the most competitive major.

We are hoping his GPA will go up. He also has a sport that would make him desirable for some of the schools on the list. But other than computer science, there is nothing he is remotely interested in.

He might be, at a couple of the schools, but not all.
