Timing of Interview/Essay High Schools?

Based on real experiences, is there a benefit to applying to selective high schools early (before the deadline)?

I received a call after the deadline two years ago for Banneker for an interviews. We received emails from SWW and McKinley.

Definitely not for SWW, which doesn't look at applications till after the deadline. But Banneker (among possible others) starts doing interviews even before then, so it couldn't hurt.

OTOH, my kid who ended up getting into Banneker applied early but was in a later wave of interviews. So who the heck knows.

Any idea why? Did teachers request this or perhaps they aren’t seeing as many recommendation letters come in?

NP. Call the my school dc hotline; they’re very helpful IME. And - you can manually send a reminder to the teacher via your kid’s application by simply clicking a link, if you haven’t done so yet it is useful! They told me that you can send a reminder every 24 hours, but to me that’s excessive; i sent one reminder and both missing recs were done in 2 days.

Any Walls interviews scheduled yet this year?

No, still waiting. But last year, the email annoucements from Walls were sent on February 20th. Considering teachers got more time to write recommendations this year, I would assume the emails would not go out until some time after 2/20.
