The school has to have some measurable outcomes I would assume so that some outside body can evaluate whether the goals are being met.

I think that's a question best put to the Executive Director. You can reach her through the contact info on their website.

We accepted a spot for Pre K at Yu YIng and I am so excited!!!!!

I've attended a number of the events this spring and summer and I have been very impressed with the leadership, teachers, new principal, and the preparation the school has done.

Yu Ying started today and I have to say it just seems fabulous. The teachers, the kids, the parents, the staff... most of all the energy and enthusiasm. If you're looking for a public that feels like a private, this is it!

Boy, someone sure is trying to drum up enthusiasm for this school. . . .

I'm 12:08 and I admit it! It's a new school and it won't succeed unless people know about it. But also, we were so depressed about our options this time last year and now I feel like we won the lottery so figured I'd share the wealth (so to speak...)

I'm a different parent from the PP who's daughter also started today at Yu Ying. I was mostly impressed by the teachers in both the Chinese class and the English class. They both seemed like excellent educators.

I am reviving this thread because I just attend an info session tonight at Yu Ying and was curious to see what the DCUM community has to say about the school.

To those of you who accepted spots and currently have children attending Yu Ying, would you mind sharing your experiences with the program. Thoughts? Criticisms?

Many thanks in advance.

Search the DC Public Schools forum. There have been several threads more recent than a year old on Yu Ying. Reviving a year old thread doesn't accomplish much. . . .

Hi PP, I am 09/29/2009 23:16 poster here. Yes, I have searched the DC Public School forum for Yu Ying threads. I have also been on the school's list serve for about two years, so I am aware of that online conversation as well.

I guess I wasn't clear in my original inquiry. I revived this particular thread because I specifically wanted to hear from parents who, a year ago, were excited and committed to the school, and who might or might not have ammended their initial enthusiasms. A year's perspective is invaluable insight for those of us who are just starting the process of deciding on schools. Thank you.

Hi PP,

I'm a Yu Ying parent whose child returned for a second year. The school has exceeded my high expectations.

I don't mind telling you how pleased we are with the program, but as a previous PP alludes I've already stated my opinion in other, more recent threads.

It's a really high quality program. The school is well on its way to IB Certification. The instruction is top notch. Consider what it says about the school that so many of the faculty (and all of the founders) have chosen to enroll their own children. They are invested in the school beyond more than a paycheck. The school community is excellent.

Of course, all of the parents will be happy when we've got a facility of our own. It would be nice to be able to hang out on the playground for a while after school gets out. I never imagined how quickly and easily my child would take to learning Chinese, and I believe that is a direct reflection of the outstanding curriculum design and the dedication of the teachers and staff.

Having said that, the school isn't for everyone. It's academically intense. Think about it, they're covering the academic portion of a regular elementary program in half the time (in English instruction) as they're scaffolding their listening comprehension and introduction to literacy of Mandarin on top of English.

Still, the children have a lot of fun. My DC could hardly wait for Mandarin camp over the summer and seeing all the Yu Ying friends again.

If you've been on the list serve for two years and are not even enrolled yet you're clearly a parent who wants an exceptional education for her child. I think you'd be happy with Yu Ying. I hope you have good luck in the lottery. I like the school so much that I would encourage anyone who REALLY wanted in and didn't get lucky in the lottery to consider Mandarin Saturday School. That way you'd have a better chance getting your child in for 1st or 2nd grade - a time at which most non-Chinese families might start to get reluctant to enroll their child (at a relative language disadvantage to other students).
