I quit drinking and have experienced no discernable benefit

Nor if you replace it with hot chocolate.
Am I the only one who noticed that?

I think the extreme changes are seen in heavy drinkers who quit. I wouldn’t call your level of consumption “heavy” from an appearance-altering perspective. Your changes will be more subtle.

Nope, I pointed it out on page 2.

Yeah, my cancer risk has gone down. The pp who mentioned red meat is right, and I stick to the recommended 1 serving per week of red meat.

I suspect that the benefits people talk about don't really accrue to people who just have wine with dinner. I was particularly interested in not waking up at night and here I am at 2am, having awaken yet again. It's fine if the benefits are all internal, and none it changes things for me since I have other reasons not to drink, but I can see why people are ambivalent about giving up a nightly glass when the benefits are oversold.

I’m exactly like you. Mid-40s runner who usually drinks 1-1.5 glasses of red wine at dinner time. I’ve stopped in January the last few years and the only difference is that I don’t fall asleep so quickly when I watch movies with the family anymore, lol.

But I think I tend to snack a bit a bit more throughout the day and my DCUM time is through the roof, so I think I’m finding other ways to deal with life’s little stresses that are probably even worse for me overall.

None of this has happened for me. Possibly, I may experience less anxiety. But that's hard to tell for sure and hard to pinpoint causation.

I'm not going to reverse course, I'm kind of stuck with not drinking due to a medical reason. But, I do want to say that people are kind of overhyping the immediate benefits. If you're doing dry January, do it for the mental discipline, do it for the hot chocolate. The rest of it is kind of misleading.

Most people quit self-medicating (drinking) and realize they need to put work into resolving their issues rather than just expecting the pain and chaos to vanish.

Same. Quit drinking 1 year ago (1-2 glasses / night). Don’t feel any different or see any benefits.

Not if she regularly eats red meat. I like how we all ignore that one because its inconvenient but harp on the alcohol one.

Do any women regularly eat red meat?

I go months without eating red meat.

Woman here and I started to add extra lean ground beef in my diet due to the amount of eight lifting I am doing. I need the protein.

If you replace wine with hot chocolate, you will not help your sleep at all. Avoid sugar all together and don’t eat or drink anything within 5 hrs of going to bed.

If you’re waking up nightly you have a different issue going on, not one that cutting alcohol will fix. Your poopooing of the health benefits is wild.

Well that sounds like a fun way to live.

Yes very odd!

Yet another story in the NYT today, literally repeating, without any actual data, the same story they have run at least twice in the last three weeks. It was affirming to see the comments this morning at least questioning the reporter on why she wrote it with no data, no specifics, and no transparency. People are finally waking up to the fact that something is going on behind this growing temperance movement. It is right to question the validity of all of this.

I never did either.

I eat healthy and always have exercised 6 days a week.

Giving up drinking made no difference.
