What would you grab if you had only 5 minutes to leave?

My dog and the firebox that has our documents/passports and in that order. Our kids are adults so they’re not in the house.

Important papers are in an accordion folder in the closet by the door, so no time wasted grabbing it. Cat. Baby formula, meal bars and a couple gas cans from the garage, if it was a truly disastrous situation. Very localized disaster like a fire I would grab a painting done by my grandmother if it was in a safe part of the house, as that room has an exit to the outside.

If I truly had as much as five minutes, I would grab laptops, and a couple hard drives, but honestly, there’s nothing there that my family would be missing in 30 years after I died so I wouldn’t be wrought up over it now.

Glasses if we happen to be sleeping because I can’t see two feet in front of me without them.
Wedding rings which are right next the glasses on my nightstand, again, if sleeping.
Phone, also on nightstand.
Kids

If I have more time left after that, I’d first get the family heirloom earrings from my dresser and run to the basement and grab the box with important documents.

1. We take the box with passports and work permits. This is KEY because we are foreigners applying for a green card.

2. All pets. They all have emergency carriers. The bird will put up a fight, so I know the emergency procedure with pillowcase.

3. Phones.

4. Kids are older but of course we'll help them (or they'll help us) escape.

Back up your stuff now and leave backup with a trusted person or at office if safe.

Or leave it in pet carrier

Empty the contents of the safe.

In order: People, pets, a small safe with our documents, then laptops and phones. Get the car out of the garage if possible.

The safe has a hard drive with baby pictures on it, but I probably need to add more pictures and sentimental jewery to the safe (it's really not big, it's just a fire resistant shoebox).

Dog, phone, id.

Photos would take too long to get and I’d miss the older photos of family, but could exist without them if I had to.

Can someone please explain why (assuming you are not in the process of immigration like a PP) you would need to grab your passport? In a situation like the wildfire, you’re not leaving the country. You have your drivers license as ID and passports can be replaced. It’s an administrative pain but not a life or death irreplaceable item.

After kids and pets, all of our important papers are in one portable box in my closet, and the family photos - including some that date to the 19th century - are right next to that box. They’re in a few small boxes that I keep in canvas totes, ready to grab if necessary.

If I had any time after that, I’d prioritize my jewelry, the silver, and a few pieces of art that mean a lot to me.

My purse, phone and cats. I don't need anything else.

Our folder with important docs (passports, ssn, etc)
Each kid's lovie
Wallet with credit cards

If I had a little more time, some pictures and maybe layer some clothes.

Computers, passports, wallet, phone, back up battery, change of clothing jewelry and pictures. And, obviously dog and family.

It’s always accepted as a second form of id when two forms are needed and sometimes, if you are out of state, your DL might not be accepted at all.

Twice, I’ve needed to immediately cash a very large check at a bank where I am not a customer. Both times they wanted two forms of gov’t-issued photo id.

Another time, we were in rural Louisiana and the bank wouldn’t take my MD id at all.

Can always reapply for passport 😆
