VDOT Cleared Major Roads but Ignored Neighborhoods – Time to Complain?

Anonymous
I have complained they haven't done our side streets off Kirby in 22101. I am also upset because trash can't be picked up. Vdot is bad.

It appears that VDOT has done a thorough job clearing all the major roads after the recent snowstorm, but they haven't touched the neighborhoods yet, including my area. I drove around today, and there were no plows in sight, giving the impression that they've finished their operations.

Is anyone else noticing this in their neighborhood? Should we start reaching out to VDOT to express our concerns or is there typically a delay in clearing the smaller streets that we should just wait out? Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!

VDOT is responsible for plowing interstates and state maintained roads. neighborhood roads are the responsibility of the county and/or HOAs (if applicable). So call your elected county officials to complain that your neighborhood hasn't been cleared.

+1 Came to say the exact same thing. Most housing developments in this area have a main stretch maintained by VDOT while the offshoots are maintained by the county. Then, for some, the community areas and parking lots are the responsibility of the HOA.

From the map, it looks like the plows are redoing all the highways again; it sounds like mismanagement; if the plows are just required to be operating and there are no requirements on where, of course, they are going to pick the easy path of just redoing the highways which are already done. This is mismanagement and outrageous, but it is a typical failure of a government-run program.

Our neighborhood was marked complete but there's still thick ice all over the roads. Trash was rescheduled for today which made me laugh...haven't seen them yet. At the rate this is going by basically waiting for it to melt naturally, kids will be off school for 2 weeks.

The neighborhoods marked green are done. The contracted plows are no longer out because they aren't needed

I don't think ours got plowed but we will survive. People are driving and snow is melting.

I just chatted with vdot and they said the map is incorrect and not to follow it. They said they had my plow request from yesterday still in and are working on it. So i guess the map is inaccurate and don't follow it lol.

It barely shows any operating in the entire state. The entire thing is messed up, I hope. Also the snow really does have to be actually removed with these temps. It will be a disaster to have the roads partially plowed like they are now (the side roads got 1 plow mid storm on Monday and no more). They are still covered and will be ice tonight. I live literally adjacent to an elementary school.

County is NOT responsible for neighborhood roads in Virginia. Virginia’s road system might be unique, but neighborhood public roads are still VDOT - unless in an incorporated town or city.

We were marked complete on the plowing map but had not been plowed. Apparently there was a glitch in a new system that resulted in us being missed. Im sure ours is not the only affected neighborhood so if you have not been plowed out by now, contact the Northern VA district VDOT management office:
