Berlin is a must for museums, city life and neighborhoods, and layers of history. It is a sprawling and not necessarily attractive city because of its history but simply must be seen and experienced. Agree you can miss Frankfurt. I especially liked Hamburg. Dresden is also worthwhile and has an incredible palace/museum collection. We had a train from Berlin to Prague and stepped off for a few hours to see it but it is a destination or side trip in its own right. |
I went to Dusseldorf for work and while it's fine, I wouldn't make it a destination. |
Berlin isn’t pretty but it’s an amazing city that will fill as much time as you have. So much to do and see. You’ll need several days at least to scratch the surface.
Munich is fun but I think the surrounding countryside is nicer. I’d rather base in Garmisch or somewhere and do day trips. You can see Munich in a day to get the vibe. Or you can base there and enjoy the night life after day trips to Neuschwannstein, etc. |
In Austria, but Salzburg is a nice add on from Munich. Instead of Frankfurt, if you want a classic western German city, consider Köln, Bremen, or Münster. |
I like Nuremberg, but in no sense is it a “hidden gem”. It’s firmly on thr tourist map! |
Munich is fantastic. Strasbourg is charming. |
Frankfurt is basically just the aiport from a tourist perspective. Köln is interesting, and the train station there is a great jumping off point for many other places. |
Frankfort is the Charlotte of Germany. |
