Do you eat unwashed berries? πŸ“πŸ«πŸ“

Anonymous
I have been friends with two people who worked in grocery stores -- one I went to law school with, and another I worked with. Because of them, I know to always wash produce. I don't want to get into details, because they are pretty gross, but to quote one of them: "Always, always wash your fruit."

That said, sometimes I buy raspberries and eat them right out of the container.

Yes. Always wash in a clean colander.

I am sure they have already been through some kind of rinse before being packaged.

I'm the PP with friends who worked in grocery stores. This is, unfortunately, irrelevant.

I rinse for cleanliness only. If there is some dirt and it doesn't bother whoever is eating it, it's all good.

Why are you eating berries in winter, is the bigger question!

Because we live in a wealthy first world country and have access to this kind of healthy produce year round.

Yeah, but does it taste good? And if so where are you buying it? All the strawberries and raspberries I can find in winter either taste lousy or go bad within 2 days. Or both.

It is hit or miss, and most of the berries you are buying this time of year are coming from South America anyways. Blueberries tend to be the hardest, but do last in the fridge for a long time if you find some decent ones. I am constantly on the hunt. It is usually one of 1) whole foods on king, 2) Wegman's behind the whole foods on king, or 3) fresh market.

No.

Do you think that farm workers have bathrooms in the fields? Don’t think they use disinfectant after going to the bathroom?

I make sure raw food is clean before I put it in my mouth.

Used to be A. Now I don't eat them.

Rinse with water in the container the berries came in, 99% of the time. Then there's when I'm coming home from Costco and can't keep my hands off the berries, and eat straight from the container. 56 years old and it hasn't killed me or gotten me sick yet

A. Yes, I take the berries out of the container and rinse them under running water before transferring to a new container

B. Yes, in fact I wash berries in some kind of food-safe cleaning solution before eating (please share your cleaning formula)

C. No, I eat berries straight out of the container because I have a superior immune system

D. It depends, I wash some berries and others I don't (please specify which ones and why)

I do A. But, eating berries right out of the container seems quite popular (on social media, watching coworkers eat lunches, my fellow travelers on airplanes, etc). Maybe I'm missing something--does the water even do anything?

I don't wash raspberries but I wash all other berries.

You aren’t really washing the pesticides off. Debis yea, which is why I do it.

Some of the pesticides come off. They will go bad much faster after rinsed.

I rinse them. Sometimes I forget. I’m not dead yet.

Curious why you don't wash raspberries? I've picked them on an organic farm and they're full of little bugs...

Anyway, a brief vinegar soak (followed by a rinse and a spin in the colander) really extends the life of berries, so that's what I usually do.

I don't eat them because of food borne illness. Still shellshocked from the frozen strawberry outbreak years ago. I thought those would. Be safe than fresh. I don't buy. Bagged greens either. Aversion.

I don't eat them but my dogs do, and I do A.
