that's a stereotype. some asians suck at math. some excel.

It is a stereotype. You shuold, however, read The Outliers which, among many other interesting things, discusses how Asian language and culture actually create an unusually strong foundation for developing superior math skills.

I've read it. Outliers is a fun book to read, but it ain't the Gospel. And a lot of it is BS

Some people like EM. Go figure.

Whether you like it or not, EM is not working for YY.

The leading class has been at YY for 4 years now? In four years of instruction YY can't get kids up to grade level? Shameful and EM is just the beginning of the problem.

when the DC-CAS was taken in 2011, the students had had at most 2 2/3 years of instruction at YY. Many joined the class in the school's second year, so had had 1 2/3 years of instruction at YY.
Whether or not the particular group of students should be "up to grade level" really depends on the students AND the school. The important info about YY's approach will be comparing the 2011 3rd grade to the 2012 4th grade. Because no kids have been added (and a couple left), it's the almost same cohort of students.
The other set of scores that will reveal more about YY is in 2013 when students who started PreK at YY take the 3rd grade test. Most of the kids in that group will have had all their preK and elementary instruction at YY (a few new join every year, but not a major %).

I don't have a dog in this fight, but passing judgement on a school based on DC-CAS results is specious. Why should all children be at grade level, whatever that means? One size fits few, ya know. Unless you live in Lake Wobegon, where all the children are above average.

Funny that every other public school in the District of Columbia is judged by the student who take the tests.

But we shouldn't judge YY by these same measures because YY is so, so special. I wonder if IT or MV will try this same line. I'd bet not.

In the meantime, the instruction via EM is weak.

YY admin, keep telling yourselves it's because of the terrible, terrible students in the leading class though. We wouldn't want to burst your balloon now, would we?

That's the whole point. Judging any school using test scores is wrong. The results of these tests are neither reliable nor valid. Unless you work for a testing company, or some politician or interest group that is seeking to trash public schools, there is no value to using test scores to evaluate schools.

I'm no fan of EM and I don't care about YY. But I do care about schools and educators being trashed using to junk data.

I assume by your tone that you are the same person who stated in 4 yrs that YY can't get students up to grade level. I responded, I am not a YY administrator nor even a fan of YY. But the fact is that YY had taught these children for either almost 3 yrs or almost 2 yrs when they took the Dc-Cas. I did not say they were terrible terrible students. I clarified the number of years that YY had taught the cohort.

(I also don't know why I engage in dialogue with someone who like you).

Err, no, we shouldn't judge it because there's only one year of scores. The standard is 3.

I'm sure this year's score will be off the chart. Can't wait to celebrate the achievement.
