Where would you live for a 1 year sabbatical (must be this hemisphere)

We want to identify a small town (not a big city) in a Spanish speaking country where she can go to school. We are fine paying for a private/international school, but want most instruction in Spanish. She’s a good student and she’s young, so we are not super concerned with the quality of the education beyond having it in Spanish. We are ok either with the US school year schedule or the south/central American schedule.

The only other considerations besides school are finding a beautiful spot with lots of access to nature.

I would love specific recommendations—e.g. a particular town or school, as opposed to suggesting a whole country. We are really open to all ideas. If you’ve lived somewhere in central/South America or have vacationed somewhere you could imagine living for a year (that’s not a huge city), I would love to hear about it.

Must be this hemisphere.

Where are you a professor, and what do you teach that you do not know that South America is not this hemisphere?

Yes it is

I'm from the southern hemisphere so think north-south. Whether you have summer or winter in December depends on this split.

Although people talk of western Hem, I'm not sure about the borders of Eastern Gem.

Rio is fine. You watch too much TV and read scary and salacious articles. Want to be safe in Rio? Easy. Don't go to crime ridden areas. It is uncanny how similar that is to someplace like DC. Or Paris. Or London. Or New York.

Rio may be safe, but it's neither a small town, nor Spanish speaking, so it doesn't seem like a match for OP who is looking for a Spanish speaking small town.

Belize is not Spanish speaking.

OP, if you are still around, my vote is for Puebla, Mexico (if not Mexico City).

I’m not gonna call PP an idiot because many people don’t know this, but Belize is both English-speaking and Spanish-speaking.

Yes, it’s the Western Hemisphere.

Go to Morocco, it's very affordable. You can have a good adventure and your child can immerse in Spanish and Arabic, both helpful for global careers.

*also you can travel to Spain and nearby countries on cheap tickets.

Their economy is suffering from high inflation- not sure I’d recommend living there at the moment.

Well Mr. sophisticated…they don’t speak Spanish there, which is what OP seeks!

How do you plan on getting a visa to live there for a year? Limited places have digital nomad visas.

Rio is perfectly safe, unless you're chasing girls or scoring drugs in favelas.

+1 For Buenos Aires, Argentina

Consider Montevideo, Uruguay as well.

I’d go to Argentina. Either BA, Cordoba or maybe Bariloche if you like to ski.
