Do you foresee a future where the DMV region becomes purple? What would have to happen?

Should we stick it out and try to turn the area from far looney left to normal right of center?

There are also a lot of highly educated people in the DMV. Unless the Republicans at a national level dramatically change their platform, the DMV isn't going to vote for them.

the swamp needs to be cleaned out

How does it feel to be a traitor? Was it extra exciting on Veterans Day?

Montgomery County elected Marc Elrich twice. They elected Kristin Mink and Will Jawando. Elrich's policies have been challenged FROM THE LEFT. Anyone who knows MoCo knows that Blair came close and Riemer took some under-45 votes away from Elrich because Elrich's housing policy is too conservative. Elrich was pressured FROM THE LEFT in his first term to defund the police and become a sanctuary county and those weren't even his policies.

Elrich is a Che Guevara-loving leftist. The next County Executive will be to the left of Elrich. It's probably going to be Jawando or maybe Kate Stewart who was mayor of Takoma Park.

There could be a backlash related to the missing middle scam. We could elect pragmatic Democrats and still move to the right a bit.

If Dems and liberals keep messing around with schools and lowering admissions performance standards, there will be a massive backlash. Asians are also getting so angry how they're being discriminated against because of their race and because they simply perform well.

There is no discrimination.

Yes I can see it happening. The thing that would trigger it is Trump doing a good job of fixing the country. I think most people in the DMV are already not happy with quality of life in terms of crime, education, immigration, culture wars, but they feel like there aren’t other options. If Trump shows that he can lead well this time and do a good job then more people will feel comfortable voting red next time.

Everyone votes their interest.

That's not true. Some people vote for the greater good, knowing it might pinch them a bit. Some people vote because they believe lies or failed ot do any research, not realizing they are voting against themselves -- so I guess they believe they are voting their interest when they are not.

You just voted for the swamp to take over. It really wasn't a swamp before. Now it will be. Let the grift and bold cronyism begin.

This is the thing. Nothing is broken. People will just realize that and then say, "he fixed it." So lame.

And that doesn't mean Republican, although perhaps in District 1 Friedson's district - where we last had a Republican. I think it means more mainline Democrats will win.

Redistricting and expanding the Council to 11 members did that to a degree. It watered down the super-progressives a bit. You have Friedson, Balcombe, Leudtke, Albornoz, and Fani-Gonzalez who are a bit more "normal," as it were. Mink and Jawando are still super-progressive, but as you can see, their bills are more often dying than not. That's a stark contrast to Jawando being a legislative machine in his first term. Stewart is turning out to be more practical than I had originally thought. Glass just does what best suits him, so he ends up being a bit mercurial depending on the issue. But I'd lump him with progressives.

The only thing growing in Montgomery County is poverty.

Democrats=bigger government so why would this region ever flip red?

Many of the races will only have republicans running with no democrats. This will turn the region red.

If we had some Rs who were in favor of legalized abortion and not demagogues on other social issues then yes I think they could make inroads (and for local you don’t even need the abortion piece since that is not determined locally). But Rs seem to like putting up people who want to demagogue on social issues rather than just take a normal center right approach to governing.

You mean like Hogan? I know a lot of Democrats in Montgomery County who love him.

But they aren't going to vote for him or other Rs for federal office because all the other Republicans are nuts.

A Hogan-like Republican could plausibly win in MoCo for a local office, but so far only wackos will run here.
