Same. Thanks for starting this thread, OP. My minimalist 12yo DD just shrugs when I ask her what she wants. Her little sister is full of ideas

It’s not that they’re minimalists, they’re in a new phase of life too. Toys aren’t interesting anymore but they are still too young to know what their interests, styles, preferences are in the world beyond toys. It’s a tough phase to buy for, but as they mature and develop their real interests it does get easier.

DP. Mine has strong interests, but there is only so much I can buy for them. He doesn't need more soccer/basketball gear, chess paraphernalia or puzzle/board games. He's not really interested in going to a concert or sports game. He also just had a birthday, which ate up all the ideas I did have. Hoping for some generic inspiration here!

-candy/junk food
-international snack box, if he likes to try new foods
-a drone
-a camera
-mad libs
-duct tape
-gift card to a laser tag place or escape room (with the offer to bring friends)

Older kids love big lego sets
Room decor (throw pillows, beanbag chair, twinkly lights, framed posters of things they love)

Tween Daughter is easy. She wants anything and is delighted by everything.

14 year old DS is impossible. All he would really ask for is cash. And he never even spends it. Just likes watching his bank account grow like Scrooge. He loves soccer, but as this is the default gift idea he has no need for any items relating to soccer, including all the team paraphernalia. He doesn't care about trendy clothes or shoes. And his birthday is November, so we used up all the random ideas we had. No idea what to do for him. Experience gifts.. maybe. But I struggle with gifting him an experience that the whole family won't participate in. And then... is it really "his" gift or a "family" gift.

I have 11 and 13 yo dds. 13 yo still loves lego sets and squishmallows and books and puzzles, but 11 yo is harder- she has outgrown toys and has largely outgrown craft kits, but isn't too excited to just get clothes and room decor, even though that's all she can come up with. We love to do experiences - I am getting the kids tickets to Six, DH is getting them tickets to a college basketball game - but I know she will want boxes to open under the tree.

Some things I have suggested to relatives for her are: fujimax instax camera, string lights for her room with clips for photos, a hoodie, bean bag chair, ugg slipper dupes, lava lamp, over the door basketball hoop, and sleepover duffle bag.

It was expensive but my 14 year old wanted a plufl (think human dog bed) for his birthday and he loves it.

If DS likes watching his money grow, how about some stock in a company he has an interest in?

Thermal sticker printer. Only about $30 with 4 rolls of stickers so hopefully it’s a good deal

Radio/music player for bedroom (doesn’t have a cell phone that plays music)

Light up frisbee. Should be fun over a dark winter night

Nice jump rope

DS 9

3-D printing pen

11yo boy: lego kit, crunch lab subscription, books, jigsaw puzzle, puzzle game, a kit to build a radio, a eugy kit, and a new comforter (he's been asking for one).

13yo girl: lego kit, yum box subscription, a book, jigsaw puzzle, flannel pajama pants, a eugy kit, and some cash (she's saving for an upcoming trip).

They're both getting scratch off world maps to track travel as they've both developed a travel bug and we spend a lot of time talking about place we'd like to go. They'll get stuff like silly socks, lip gloss/chapstick, chocolate orange, small gift card, etc in their stockings.

My 14yo is starting to get into clothes so he got a lot of clothes. He’s also getting a new suitcase to replace the babyish one he’s been using. Otherwise a book, gift cards, flannel PJ bottoms, Nikes, and a new pair of slides.
