Travel baseball kids who don't play in HS- what next?

The travel teams are all going to change very soon, so the team that exists right now in all likelihood will look very different in two years.

They can find a Babe Ruth league, or better yet find a different sport, or get involved in Robotics or something else at school or any number of different things.

At the very least, I would tell my kid they have to pick a Spring/full year activity they plan to pursue if they aren't playing HS baseball.

Let the screaming begin.

Nobody is going to scream at you, but there are plenty of nvtbl teams that play a local schedule. You’re right, babe Ruth would be a fun option too. Or putting in some hard work training for the summer season with the hope of making jv as a sophomore is valid too!

Don’t you think there is value in playing a sport for fun? I play tennis just because I like it and I can get some exercise with friends. Adults play pickleball and softball and soccer and run in races all for fun. I don’t see why a kid should be judged for that.

I do, which is why I suggest finding a different sport to play, ideally with your HS friends. There are many sports to pick that are no-cut, so at the very least...try one of those during the Fall or Spring. Who knows, it may become your new favorite sport.

My 8th grader has been playing travel baseball for years but he’s at the end of the road. He will play 14U this year but is just kind of over baseball. Doesn’t want to put in the time and effort to improve and realizes it’s just not his passion. He will switch to football for HS and not even try out for baseball.

Travel baseball for years. Who told you to do that?

DP here. Not all of them are complete money grabs.

Some of them are local play only and really fun for the families.

As for high school ball- it’s good to try new things.

The HS season is like, 6 weeks long. WGAF about HS baseball. Plus, you get all the politics about sometimes the coach is affiliated with a certain travel program. Or, you get worried about the kid getting bad instruction.

I know a handful of very good players that sit out their HS club, bc their travel experience is more important.

That's a completely different scenario vs. what OP listed, and more akin to high-level soccer players.

There actually isn't a decent national travel team worth their salt that offers a Spring season because even first-round MLB draft picks will play for their HS teams. Also, I don't what you are talking about with a 6-week season. In the DMV, the season starts mid-February and ends in early to Mid-May.

In the DMV, first games are last week in March. Season ends 3rd week of May. So, sure, not 6 weeks. It's actually 8 weeks.

And I'm not saying that they choose their travel team over their HS team. I'm just saying they sit out their HS club and train those weeks instead, for the summer season. It's actually much more common than you think.

Nobody wants to get hurt or get bad coaching when they are trying to get seen. And you don't get seen at HS games

I don’t know why you keep posting incorrect season dates. Practice in the DMV starts mid-Feb…games start early March, playoffs can go through early June in VA and in MD and DC they go through third week of May.

I don’t know any top players that sat out their HS…Bryce Eldridge (first round MLB HS pick) played for Madison, as did Triantos (2nd round MLB HS pick) as did Morabito from Gonzaga (2nd round MLB pick from HS).

1/2 the Corona HS starting 9 (#1 in country) will get drafted direct from HS into the MLB. All will play their HS season.

DP. Have 2 kids that did travel baseball and also did not play in HS. The "travel" wasn't far; the rec league competition unfortunately became depleted bc all the "good" players seemed to do travel baseball at some point. Both kids did other fall / sports and concentrated on those in HS.

He wanted to at the time. And the travel was at most 45 mins away. Why wouldn’t we?

Because you are the parent. He is burned out at 14. You should have eased him into it. Parenting 101 - lesson 4.

That is more for soccer (and maybe other sports), not baseball. Even IMG baseball players play for their high school.

NP. But kids quit baseball at 14. Has nothing to do with rec/club/travel/select/showcase/etc

14 is just when things get more serious and something things need more attention than others. It always happens at 14 with baseball. Nothing to do with PP as a parent "burning out their kid" Gimme a break

Playing travel ball for years. This is a recipe for burnout. Which the OP said. The kid never had a chance.

+100

Large numbers of kids quit at 13-14. Baseball becomes less about fun and more serious- and a lot more work. Also many kids (including one of my own sons) realize they are probably nearing the end of the line talent wise and will struggle to make competitive high school team. Or aren’t willing to put in the work to make high school level teams, and decide to focus on something else. Really common.

Pretty much any kid playing travel ball at 14 has been playing for years, yes. Kids don’t start travel ball at 13-14 anymore.

Believe it or not, Little League can often be a more demanding schedule than travel/club ball- but that is highly dependent on the club team.

He wanted to at the time. And the travel was at most 45 mins away. Why wouldn’t we?

Because you are the parent. He is burned out at 14. You should have eased him into it. Parenting 101 - lesson 4.

NP

Two questions;
1- what are your credentials/qualifications?
2- what is wrong with you?

Ask any expert on kids sports, they will set you straight.

Experts on kid’s sports will tell you not to let your kid specialize in one sport. They will tell you not to let your kid play a single sport year round. They will tell you to let the kid lead, and don’t push them to do a sport or a more intense version than they want to do.

They will not tell you that playing travel ball “for years” to the age of 14 is a recipe for burnout. That’s just stupid.

DS has played on a travel baseball team since he was 11 and is now 14 so he's been playing "for years." If he was flying all over the country and playing in lots of tournaments, I'd agree that would be ridiculous, but that's not what travel ball means these days (or at least it doesn't have to and there are a lot of "local travel" programs). He plays two, sometimes three games/week and has two practices a week. He also plays rec soccer, rec basketball, and flag football. We moved to travel because we liked the coach and the rec options available to us weren't cutting it (he wanted to play with kids who were actually interested in getting better too). Will he play in HS? Maybe. He'd like to, but it will depend on where he ends up. If he does not play, will I regret spending the time and money on travel ball for DS? Absolutely not. He's learned so much--about baseball and life skills--and has made some very good friends. Very tired of the "travel sports" are all the same and insane mantra that some people seem to trot out at every opportunity.

To answer OP's question--the options for spring ball will be very limited because most clubs take a break in the spring for the high school teams. If the house leagues don't fit your schedule, he could do workouts with a trainer that make sense with your schedule and then play summer/fall ball.
