Test optional schools

Going TO to selective colleges is fairly common. You just have to have a strong GPA and ECs to offset the TO pathway.

If you have a few Bs or weaker rigor, you need to submit a high SAT/ACT as a counter weight.

Agree with this.
Also if a selective college and TO, you are definitely compared to your peers from your HS.

UChicago 46% SAT, 30% ACT
Vandy 25% SAT, 26% ACT
WashU 29% SAT, 28% ACT
BC 28% SAT, 16% ACT
USC 32% SAT/14% ACT

UChicago has never had a class where over 50% of enrolled students were TO. Ever.

Of the others, depends on overlap, which may be a much smaller % than pre-TO.

Policies are in flux. Be aware that BC is now test-recommended ("encouraged"). Vandy is a weird one, as pre-TO they loved strong scores and had a smitch higher reported ranges vs similarly-ranked schools. USC is in CA, which may explain the large % TO.

My DD asked the AO for Vandy, WashU and USC about test scores this summer and fall.

Vandy said do not submit below 50% unless it is a "high score" for your HS.
WashU and USC directly said don't submit below 50% at all. They said your application would not be hurt and they don't "assume" a low score.

Other schools may be different.

Duke AO said not submitting test scores WILL NOT hurt the application. They haven't their published their CDS in a while either....
Also, their scoring rubric has changed.

Just don't hold back actual good scores. A 1450 is a really, really good result. Use it. That way the school averages will reflect reality and not just the kids with 99th percentile results.

Whether a 1450 is a good score completely depends on the school you are coming from and the you are applying to.

A 1450 from a school with UMC kids is not competitive for most T20 schools, and would not bolster the student's application.

From that list, UMiami and Cornell are no longer test optional. They require scores for next fall's admission season.
