Summer, mild weather, nature/adventure travel

New River Gorge NP in WV. Ace adventure resort is not fancy but offers a lot of what you’ll like. The rafting is great. Zip-lining has unique features making it different from CR and Belize zip lines. Bridge walk is very fun. Great hiking. We combined it with a few days in Richmond. Fun trip with no flying. Our accomodations were on the nicer side and the activities were pricey, but we still came in under $8k

Nova Scotia - specifically Cape Breton Island. We had an awesome active vacation there years ago.

Cool jungle June thru August? South America. Brazil from Salvador south. But not much farther than Rio. South of Rio can get chilly.

It looked like your kids need to be older to do white water rafting (16+). Where did you go to raft (or maybe you have older kids).

Teen and tween. Maybe 8k total.
I was considering Alaska but the places I was finding were wildly over budget.

Crested Butte would be fantastic and you could do it for much less than 8k. Horseback riding, adventure park on the mountain, mountain biking, white water rafting, paddle boarding, hiking, great walkable historic district with shopping, ice cream shops, fun kid friendly restaurants, arts and crafts studios downtown, they have a lot of fun fault and weekly camps for kids you can sign up by the day to learn technical outdoor activity or date night drop ins. Nice low 70’s.

I was in Rio and Salvador last August and it was 90 degrees. So much for winter!

Alaska is pricey because their tourist season is so short. Would look to something similar but with a longer tourism window, such as the San Juan Islands/Vancouver Islands (if you were looking at SE Alaska), or maybe Glacier or the Canadian Rockies. Or skiing in South America!

I think you would probably love Yellowstone/Grand Tetons. Depending on how much you spend on flights, etc I think you could probably do a week on your budget including a few activities. But, it would also be really easy to spend more.
