Vanderbilt's President is largely heralded as one of the most astute out there. He evidently see value in NYC.

Interesting, I don’t think the school generally has gone in the right direction for the past five years or so, culture changing for the worse. Vandy will lose what has made it Vandy. Oh well.

This! It's just a money grab scheme Ala Columbia, but Vandy doesn't have the same brand to do something like this. Schools with hospitals have a cheat code in the money making arena.

This thread makes me think of Gloria Vanderbilt and NYC socialites.

UVA Wise, Northwestern Qatar, Duke Kunshan, Cornell NYC, Emory Oxford, etc.

Many schools have satellite campuses.

UVA Wise is because part of UVA's mission is to help with education in SW Virginia. It is not to increase revenues. Northwestern Qatar is not at all the same. It is largely there because of the opportunity to increase revenues.

Northwestern University received over $690 million over more than a decade from the Middle Eastern country to open its campus in Qatar.

I wonder what price they are paying for that cooperation right now?

Yes, it's running a satellite campus just like many other universities.

The Vanderbilt equivalent of UVA Wise would be a satellite campus in Memphis.

No, it would be a satellite campus ALSO in Appalachia, like Wise is, in a community with few jobs and crushing poverty. Something in east Tennessee like Bledsoe County

Why ? Non-issue. Huge benefit to the school.

Yes, and its focus is on journalism and media, which is sorely needed in that region, and has an additional focus on serving students from "The Global South". The Northwestern Qatar campus has excellent synergy with Al Jazeera, for example, and is probably the only satellite campus anywhere that has produced Rhodes scholars.

Harvard Medical school has never owned its affiliated hospitals and I don't think that has handicapped Harvard.

Qatar has a very vibrant media scene. Al Jazeera has many opportunities for hands-on experience for Northwestern students to learn about news gathering.
