How do teen ballerinas handle heavy periods?

DP. Have you actually tried a cup? You might be surprised at the actual amount of blood. Also, it’s much better at blocking leaks than a tampon in my experience.

Like massive clots? I’d rather just pull out the tampon and wear period underwear. I so wish I had that when o got my period at 11yo. Thankfully mine weren’t heavy but sometime especially as a young girl’s cycle regulates.

Her studio works with girls and doesn’t help them with managing this by encouraging helpful clothing?

They have a ballet pink leotard and used to have tights as well - only black in stock now.

Swimmers have the same issue.

I had horrible migraines while taking it for years, didn't know they were related.

And even though it is "safe"- the girl is 12 yo.

Counterpoint since we’re sharing medical anecdotes, not facts:

Continuous bcp is the only thing that makes my migraines even vaguely responsive to regular and rescue migraine meds. It also keeps my depression at bay. It was hell while off of it and trying to conceive, and hell before I started taking it as a teen.

There are many dosages and types of continuous bcp. There are ones that are safe for a 12 year old, no quotation marks needed.

Continuous birth control!!! best decision I ever made for my teen girls. Dump the placebo week. Only needed a pediatrician to prescribe. Mine are on Portia and no side effects except some spotting here or there the first month.

You can change to any BCP you like if you have any side effects. My girls are the opposite. One had severe PMDD and the other heavy periods. Now they are less moody, no bloating, no cramps, no headaches. No feminine products.

And yes, it is 100% safe so age does not matter. My youngest started at 13.

My daughter's ballet program had to wear a certain brand of a basic leotard and the color matched what level you were. They weren’t allowed to wear underwear just tights and the leotard.

I agree that a lot of very thin girls don’t bleed much if at all. I was very thin and had barely there periods. I don’t think I was ovulating either.

I’m not sure if that’s with every female that is considered under the standard weight but at that age everyone in ballet class was still flat chested with skinny limbs. They were handpicked for the program so maybe it’s not the typical girl that age.

Gosh, that is hard op. I know when my period used to just gush like nuts and nothing was helping than going to the bathroom as soon as I felt it. Maybe she can excuse herself and do the same?

The pill. There’s no medical reason to have a period.

yes, yes it is - this is going to be awful for a ballerina

Have her wear disposable “Underwear”, easy to put on and easy to change.

I was a very thin teen and I got super heavy periods.

Non ballerinas need to stop replying. You can’t wear underwear in a ballet class past age 4!

There is a chart somewhere on the world wide web of the options for BCP and their side effects. Women are led to believe that BCPs are all the same - they are definitely not.
