| What a ridiculous post. If you want to gouge your eyes out, don't read it. Just like identifying oneself as a "SAHM", someone can identify themselves as "Big Law" to signal to others that might be in the same boat or interested in the post where they are coming from. Nobody told you to read every post on every subject and, quite frankly, as someone in "Big Law" that was scanning the forums for relevant information, you've just wasted my |

NP here. I majored in Art History too (and loved every minute of it... B.A. and M.A.)! And why not "Biglaw" or "IB"... because I found both of these fields repugnant, even in college. My opinion of both of these fields has not changed. And why not medicine? ... because I knew I certainly wasn't cut out to be a doctor! Not everyone goes into higher education with the end goal of making "loads more money." But end of story: I ended up going back to school to get a teaching degree. Love that too, although you know how much this country values teaching. $ as opposed to $$$. |
| Too bad you didn't pursue graduate work in art history. That should have been one of your options. |
I did... I have an M.A. as my post indicates. Didn't want to get my doctorate... too much alone time, too much debt. I'm happy teaching now (I won a teaching fellowship and my teaching degree was subsidized). |
| I would love for one of my kids to major in art history -- or literature, or music. Every kid I meet these days is majoring in "business" or "marketing," or maybe they're "pre-law" or "pre-med." I don't know what it is about our culture that has our teenagers so focused on making tons of money. I majored in one of those disciplines because I loved it (yep, followed by law school and biglaw, but I actually loved those too). It would be nice to live in a world where more people felt free to follow their dreams when they were young -- or at least to have dreams other than of material success. |
It might have something to do with the fact that they have grown up watching our economy crumble. Every day on the news are more stories of people being unemployed, losing their homes, etc. Many of these kids might have even grown up seeing this firsthand. I agree that it's a shame to focus on money rather than what will make you happy, but I can see why many teenagers place a higher premium on financial success. |
Completely disagree. The current generation of teenagers has more access to "stuff" than any previous generation. DH and I are in our 40s and we often talk about how going out to eat, having a/c or a dishwasher were all luxuries when we were growing up. A family vacation was a weekend at the beach. People drop $100 on American girl dolls and ipods for their kids and don't even think twice about it. Even kids in the poorest neighborhoods are walking around with electronics and expensive clothing. |

You don't really believe any lawyer is special when they are a dime a dozen I hope? |
