Lower level AAU basketball teams with B and C teams

Unless he is really, really good (and it sounds like he is not) OR 6'4, making one of these teams will be a real reach.

He is good, not really really good. He is very athletic and has played soccer, baseball, tennis and golf his entire life. We strongly prefer him to play golf but his heart is set on basketball.

Of course he wants to play basketball over golf, he’s not 50 years old. Playing daily for six months is an accomplishment. Hopefully they’ll be a team for him.

My son didn't start until he was 11. He too is a natural athlete. He could play with anyone but when he got into organized ball it took him a little while to adjust and learn how to play on a team.
We got him on a "b" team where he got playing time and that along with "skills training" not only got him up to the level of others who started earlier, now he has progressed to be better than those kids who started earlier and plays at a much higher level. So starting late doesn't matter as long as he puts in the work with "skills training" and finds a program where he will get playing time.
More important to be on a team where he plays than to be on a team where he rides the bench.

McLean's second team was not good. He has a chance at making that OR the Falls Church team which played in the lowest division. The Vienna second team was also pretty weak but I think would be hard to break into.

So prioritize: (1) McLean, (2) Falls Church
(3) Vienna/Great Falls. Take him to the open gyms and reach out to the coaches ahead of time.

If you are OK with a drive, two other options are Herndon (may be hard up for players), FPYC (their second team was really not good) or Gum Springs (2 teams, both average). But it can get old driving in the dark on weeknights all winter long to far away practices-its a long season.

If he's not in the assigned zip codes, the coaches have to be willing to use an exception on him.

For an 8th grader who just started to play 6 months ago, no way he makes these teams.

Even the house rec teams have some decent players on these teams.

Unless your 8th grader is taller than 6’2 or has some amazing athletic skills, it’s kinda late to the game.

My feeling is it’s too late. Basketball takes years of practice in form and shooting.

Fcybl tryouts were the first week of October so your opinion here in January on his chances is kind of moot.
