Doing laundry on vacation?

Good choice. Enjoy your vacation!

If you’re going to a resort with a pool, you will likely spend much of the day in a bathing suit. If you bring athletic wear, bring two outfits, not 5-6. Wash one in sink after yoga/tennis/hike and hang to dry. Wear the second one the next day. One to two outfits for dinner, 1-2 for touring around. One comfy outfit to wear for travel there and back. Done.

Why do people always suggest this? I have zero desire to wear dirty clothes and my guess is about 99 out 100 people feel the same way. And don't tell me because you rinsed it in the sink it is clean.

the activities require multiple changes of clothes. scrubbing clothes in the sink every night and putting on damp not really clean undies seems like the worst of both worlds.

You can hand wash undies just fine in a sink, and unless they are some super freaking heavy cotton, they will completely dry overnight.

But also, you are not saving much space in your luggage by washing your undies, so it really depends on what other clothing OP must bring - can that be hand washed effectively.

There are 5 people in my family. We’re not washing everyyone’s socks and underwear in the sinks we wash our faces and brush our teeth in. That’s totally disgusting. I’m also not going to hang all this crap all around the room like we’re in some sort of POW camp. Packing more or doing a proper load of laundry are the only real options.

I feel bad for the men who married such high maintenance women!

(Drying socks in your room is like being a POW?)

Do you travel alone or with a family? Where does one hang all these clothes? Do you bring a clothesline with you? Sorry, having to navigate all these drying clothes is incredibly stupid. Just bring more clothes.

My husband would also just bring more clothes rather than have to wear his body gel rinsed in the sink undergarments. He’d think I was nuts if I even suggested doing this.

Underwear takes up very little room in any case. Taking enough underwear for a five day trip should not be the thing that pushes someone into checked bag territory. And I totally agree that rinsing underwear in the bathroom sink does not scream vacation to me.

Bring your clothes that are at the end of their lifespan and chuck em after wearing.

This is why we stay in a timeshare most times so we can easily do laundry. Or we pick a hotel with a laundry room and my husband will take an afternoon and do the laundry while reading a book.

Me too. Honestly nothing makes me happier than going home with a bag full of clean clothes,

I can’t decide if I should just go the carry-on route and do laundry half way through, or say f it and pack the big check-on? We will have some planned downtime when I can do laundry but it’s not that convenient (other hotel in a resort complex, although we could just sit by the pool while it’s going). But I kind of hate the idea of having to plan a chore like that? But also hate the idea of paying $100 to check the bag and having to get to the airport earlier and linger at baggage claim particularly since I want to spend less time in crowds to avoid covid. (Not a covid phobe; just don’t want to be sick on vacation!)

I know I’m overthinking this …

If the house I’m renting has a washer I wash clothes cause I dislike packing dirty clothes in a suitcase. If not I don’t. I e never had a hotel do my laundry.

Is this post about Casey on or laundry? I do carry on whenever possible.

Personally, I always pack the big bag *and* do laundry. But I find it enjoyable to take the time away from everyone to sit in a warm laundromat while the machines are running. I bring my iPad and snacks, and I zone out.

For instance, I'm heading to Ireland next week. I'll pack a bag, do laundry after a week, and then keep going for the next week, rinse and repeat (literally).

Same. I really don’t mind doing laundry & it’s so nice to have fresh clothes. I do have to say 5 days is right on the edge of needing to do it, though. It does make a difference where you are, climate-wise. Stockholm is very doable, Italy not so much. I’d try to take enough to not have to do laundry in my carry on, knowing that I have the option of doing laundry if I need to.
