Etiquette when retired friend texts every day

Anonymous
Your retired friend is likely bored + lonely so yes, it may hurt her feelings if you told her that her text messages are too much.

A better idea would be to just click a Love ❤️ or a Like 👍🏽 on her daily texts which shouldn’t take more than a few seconds.

Could youb just reply with a thumbs up or heart? Seems like a nice gesture for her to make and I bet she isn’t seeking a response.

Ignore. Its the only thing you can do.

Is it really OCD? What makes you say this?

The daily repetition and the lack of variation.

Seems more like ASD than OCD (therapist).

+2 This isn't something to get annoyed about. Read the text and emoji it when you have a few seconds. Done.

Unless you believe there's some sort of underlying malice, don't be so fussy about this very small thing.

This feels like screaming into the void about how it takes a village, without getting that the kindness of a thumbs up is actually part of the village.

Want a village? Help build it.

I have a friend like this, and I also feel guilty (I know that I and the other person she texts are the closest thing to family she has). Generally, my response to any of the memes/quotes/pics is an easy emoji - a heart, laugh, etc. Doesn't take any time and at least (hopefully) makes her feel good.

Why does it matter that the person is retired? You sound jealous. There are plenty of people with jobs who also text too much.

Why not text back once "Hi I am busy and don't always get to read your daily texts but thanks for thinking of me. "

SO spammy!

And in the time it takes you to delete, you send a heart and change someone’s day for the better

+1 Some people are just looking for problems.

My elderly neighbor (in her 90s) texts me every night “good night” or “god bless and have good dreams”. I don’t know how I became her nightly ritual, but I know from my own grandmother that your world shrinks dramatically as you age in the last decades. It is absolutely worth allowing this relatively benign intrusion in your day for the sake of giving someone lonely a connection. If it went beyond a text, I would say something, but it’s very minor compared to a visit or even a phone call.
