If using CC credit is a problem, just do DE with a local university then (or find a university that does DE that your kid's expected schools might take). For example FCPS has an agreement with George Mason for DE classes, but families can take the initiative to do DE themselves with GMU as well. It's in the back of my mind because our school's math only goes through AP Calculus AB and DC is on track to be done with that by junior year of HS. |
Harvard, Yale and Princeton websites all say they don't accept DE. Harvard and Yale don't accept AP. I got bored of checking after that. |
What are you paying the private school for? |
DE is college classes taken in place of HS classes. That is not the same thing as straight [community] college credits obtained completely outside of your HS curriculum. Some schools accept college transfer credits easily, some only allow them to be used to skip otherwise required courses if the community college course is deemed equivalent. Some allow both credit and skipping but depending on the specifics of the major and the course. |
I don't think there is a hard and fast rule on what DE means. Locally it's defined as any college class taken while the student is enrolled in high school. It's not a replacement, it's an addition. DE high schools operate differently. The one near us operates as an IB program. |
This. When we asked our private school said something about how they wouldn’t want our students to be in a community college classroom environment. |
Defined by whom? |
Why would the the elites frown on this? Why is it objectionable for a high school student to take college courses? |
|
If your kid is up for it fine but my teens need the summer for a break to decompress…work, have fun
Students who are motivated on their own fine but don’t push them.. while they earn college credit thr class over the summer is compressed and more rigorous than a semester and yes they will get college credit but it won’t count toward HS goa etc |
| A community college English 101 class will be far easier than 9th grade private school English. If you need a harder English class, you need a new private school. |
| Bumping this topic because a few parents at SSFS are floating this idea. I don't like the idea. Thoughts? |
Floating what idea? Taking DE classes? If SSFS and scheduling allow, then sure, if you want to, then do; if you don’t want to, don’t. Does SSFS offer APs? |
Just scroll through what's already been posted for thoughts. No privates in the area do this probably for good reason. |
Parent of recent SSFS graduate here. Yes, SSFS has some excellent AP classes. I don't like the idea of dual enrollment either. |
I don’t see the problem with a school offering DE. If you don’t like the option don’t do it. But, it’s available for kids who want to do it. Live and let live. |
