Just back from a week in Rehoboth…

I don't consider any stretch of sand where you can smell fried dough a beach.

DE beaches are not status symbols. The people with real status go to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket and after that South Carolina. I'll give you Biden. But other than that, the vast majority of DC's well-to-do do not go to DE beaches.

Not too many families from DC go there anymore. Most go to OBX. Rehoboth got too expensive. A nice house with a pool is $15,000 a week.

?

As a native Marylander from MoCo who works in DC, my peer group (solidly Gen X) has a family beach house (either their own or their parents’ house or a sibling’s house). Everyone still goes—and many still rent. It’s a generational nostalgia.

We know OBX and Sandbridge are cheaper, but we want to go to our old haunts for crabs, pizza, ice cream, Minigolf, etc.

And we take our “real” vacations elsewhere.

Another local here and this is definitely the case with my friends (and myself). We go to OC/Fenwick because we have family and parents who own places there. Most of my friends growing up had parents with places there because they were easier to buy back then--$50K would get you a 2-bedroom condo in the 90s and their primary homes that they bought in the early 80s only cost $40K. So it was affordable. And they still have those same places so we can spend a good bit of time there over the summer but still afford another "real" vacation. No way I would spend $8K, $10K, $15K to rent a place in MD or DE. But for free....

East coast beaches aren’t all crowded and dirty. I will give you that California beaches are beautiful and nothing on the East coast comes close to CA, Oregon and Washington in terms of natural beauty. Where the east coast comes out on top is you can actually go in the water. West coast water is too cold, at least for me.

West coast water is cold, sharky, and the SoCal pacific is growing even more polluted.

Plus, the Pacific Northwest is gloomy and depressing. Ugliest beaches I’ve ever seen.

Ageeed, but you have to drive. The point of Rehoboth is that it’s a walkable town.

You don’t have to drive in OC. We stay for a week every summer and really only drive to the grocery store at the beginning of the week, and maybe once down to the boardwalk if we go. We walk to the beach and everything else.

We don’t cook at home while on vacation
I haven’t been able to find a location walkable to a lot of decent restaurants there.

Oh, c’mon, your standards are too high!

Maybe but I do not want to stay in some original cottage that still has the nasty grandma furniture from the 80s and wood paneling and window units. I want it to be at least as nice as my house and walkable to town and the beach.

We also love Funland, Browseabout books, the bike trail, Gordon’s Pond, and have a few fav restaurants. We bike or walk around so don’t deal with traffic.
It’s lovely in the Spring and fall when there are less people there.
If you don’t like it OP don’t go.

A mile is really far at Rehoboth. Might as well just go to ocean city than sit in the horrible traffic on Rt 1.

I’m an east coaster, but the PNW beaches are beautiful. Monterey and Big Sur are often enveloped in fog, but I think they’re amazing too. Agree that the water is too cold and “sharky.”

I’m not aware of anyone who’s ever thought of Rehoboth as a “premier beach.”

Basically, it’s about nostalgia. So going there once for a week isn’t really the point.

Classic Yogi Berra, well done.

The beaches are also pretty crowded and the water is freezing. But the beaches are nice and wide with nice sand and it’s a lot closer tjn the Carolina’s. I also appreciate being able to walk out for burgers or ice cream.

This is rather bizarre. Lewes has like 3 bars and mostly shuts down by 9:00PM. It is a year round historic village and not really a "resort" town the way the beach front places are heading south.

It's what we have. Not everywhere is Santa Monica.

Rent in the area called “South Rehoboth” or “Country Club Estates.” You’ll be a five to 15 minute walk to tons of great Rehoboth restaurants, and 15 min to beach / boardwalk.
