Pretty sure it's a joke.

Most rescues provide updates on animals, and they'll often make it clear the pet's name was changed: "Joe (formerly Neville) was adopted by Karen two years ago . . . "

I renamed my dog who was about 5 years old when I got her. She was at a rescue for about a month before I got her and they named her a strange name.

Prior to that she was in a hoarding situation and probably didn’t even have a name.

She’s totally used to her new name.

We did not. He's 10 and he's know that name for that long

I thought it was when I adopted my 4 year old dog, so we didn't change it, but we've given him a million nicknames that he responds too. In retrospect I wish we had just renamed the dog.
