Yes. I hate that stereotype about Black women. I learned to swim as a young girl. There are plenty of Black girls and women who swim. We wear swimming caps. Simple.
And the tragedy is that Olympic champion Cullen Jones has been working for years to address racial differences in learn-to-swim and drowning rates. Maybe Leslie and Cullen Jones can work together to promote learn-to-swim efforts.
I like Leslie Jones but this is why I l think that joke was thoughtless. It’s like making a joke about how women are bad at math or something — there’s no reason to discourage a group that is historically disadvantaged in a field by announcing publicly “we don’t do that.” How discouraging for a girl that might be dreaming of learning to swim competitively.
